I am replacing my cracked 1G exhaust mani off my 91 Talon. While looking I know I would be better off with a 2G ported mani, but will that directly hook up or do I need to modify anything?

I also have been made an offer for a 1G mani which this guy is trying to sell me the automatic transmission version vs the manual transmission version. Is there a difference between the two or is this guy trying to rip me $40.

There is no point in buying another 1g manifold. They crack way too easily and you can't do any porting without compromising structural integrity. Do yourself a favor and buy a 2g manifold. I put a 2g mani on my Talon 5-speed and the only thing I had to do was grind a little off the lower left corner so it would fit, and some people don't even have to do that.

Thanx jbillakdsm,

I will buy the 2g ported version then. Do you or anyone else know if there is a difference between the Manual transmission version and the automatic transmission version or was someone trying to get some money out me? I cannot see why the transmission would change the shape or size of the mani.

No Auto difference I know of - I installed a 95 Exh Manifold on mine - lists $230 from Mitsu MD308197- straight bolt up - No grinding as some guys say is necessary - Might want to pick up a few spare Exh Studs & all new Nuts & Washers as well as both Gaskets & some Anti Seize.

I planned on replacing all of the studs. I had three broken so I removed them all and am replacing them with better ones.

You then sir will be pulling at a minimum everything from the Turbo up - Problem is when you disturb the Turbo you might end up with other leaks (oil, coolant, etc) I would plan on pulling Turbo & Manifold as an ASSEMBLY & replacing ALL those gaskets too, Anti-Seizing everything - I hope you have a vise for those studs. I personally would FIRST jerk the Radiator for that job - it's quite easy to remove & makes it a HELLUVA lot easier.

I have the studs out, left fan, exhaust mani so far. I assume you are referring to Anti Seizing as taking the turbo out and cleaning it up and putting new connections on it. I haven't seen any reviews on detaching the Turbo and oil lines yet on the Internet.

No - Anti Seize is this silver stuff that keeps Exhaust Fasteners from "galling" together & eases future maintenance - The smallest tube you can buy will do about 13 DSM's! Sounds like you a half done!

BTW - a lotta guys recommend going back with ALL BOLTS in lieu of Studs for future ease of Turbo removal.

It is worth every minute of your time to replace the studs with bolts where you can ESPECIALLY the one that goes from the turbo to the exhaust manifold. That way if you ever have to pull your turbo, you can just take out the four bolts and you're done. 4 brand new bolts for your turbo are $18 at Slowboy Racing (In the DIY section).

The other thing to replace while you have everything apart is the small soft lines in between the hard coolant lines that go to and from your turbo. Most auto parts stores will only sell you the one with the sharp bend in it, but you can cut enough off the end to make the other line. I didn't do this and it cost me three thermostats to find my leak.

I received my 2g manifold today. I noticed the opening to the turbo was much large on the 2g manifold than on my old 1g manifold. Is this going to be a problem? Also I notice two cracks on the toungue like peice coming out of the manifold. Cracks were inside, none outside.

I noticed a much larger opening on the 2g. Will this create a problem. What shall I do with the old ring that was between the 1g manifold and turbo housing.

I believe the ring can be taken out, its just insurance to help keep pressure off the gasket. The 2g manifold is supposed to have a wider opening...thats why it flows better. (That ring may still work...unless the new manifold is ported...then I dont think you can use it)
