I'm going to be replacing my crank becaue whoever owned the car before me had a clutch installed and the mechanic screwed up the flywheel bolts ..one broken off ...2 of them were standard threads and other's were cross threaded. Flywheel came loose. Besides removing the tranny, transfer case, exhaust , oil pan , and bracing underneath oil pan. Whatelse would I have to remove and what kinda tips can you guys give me for reinstallation?

Of course the timing belts as well, and may as well replace them and the water pump at the same time.

I'd about drive across the country to give you a ride past the shop that did that. At about 3 in the morning. With some kerosene and a couple of road flares.

I guess maybe one of the complete engines that some people have up here or on DSM trader...

Some are good deals and you could swap it out faster than pulling a crank with a block in the car still.

Rather than go through that trouble, why not run a tap down them? You can do that with the motor in place and the tranny/clutch/flywheel off.

Worse case you tap them one size larger. Drill the crank out out with the correct size bit to allow you to tap it one/two size(s) larger. Then on the flywheel, drill the holes out to fit the new bolt dia.

Tap set at Sears is cheap. So are drill bits. And it beats trying to tear the thing apart to replace the crank.

Also you could use a stainless steel thread insert...

Check out timeserts... they just screw in and arent much bigger than the stock hole.

There is also key serts that drill in and have stakes to hold them down.

ok...timeserts. Sounds good..I will replacing motor in summer but need to over come this problem. So, I'm just going to rethread them with new hardware and should soleve all my clutch slipping issues and rod knock sounding problems. Thanks for your support guys...I'll let you know how it comes out

Ok. I broke down and baught another motor. But I came to the decision of just drilling and retapping them. What are timeserts and thread inserts. Are they same as helicoils? I'm going to pull everything apart and give it a shot repairing them. Round 2. Worse case I'll just swap out motor.
