So my 97 TSI AWD needs a few things done...first off clutch is completely gone, it was slipping bad and now my car wont move, second i believe my head gasket is blown, and the cars timing belt hasnt been changed in about 40k miles (last owner changed it)

So im basicaly wondering ballpark estimates of what you think i should be paying for
clutch replacement
Head Gasket Replacement
Timing Belt Replacement (including water pump/tensioner's and all the other good stuff)

all parts will be bought myself

No telling...easily over $1k I would think. The clutch replacement and timing belt job are two of the most labor-intensive tasks there is on DSM's. On a more positive note, replacing the timing belt would just be an extension of replacing the head gasket. Make sure you do all timing components and the water pump at the same time.

I would suggest getting some estimates from actual shops in your area, and then posting those numbers up to see what people think.

Yeah I agree that it will be well around 1k or more depending also on what parts are purchased and if you do the work yourself or not.

Depending on how much you are willing to spend on a clutch, about 1k sounds right. Don't buy a cheap clutch from Autozone, if you want something that will last a while I suggest ACT clutches, they work miracles. The timing belt is a pain in the ass to chance, so I suggest taking it to a shop and letting someone else deal with the headache (as long as that someone isn't me, ROFL). I would also chance the water pump while you're at it as well.

Way way over a grand if you buy parts from the shop doing the work.

The last head gasket I did on a 4g63 was over a grand and then add on a clutch job on top of that. If you take it to any good shop they are also going to have the head checked just for peace of mind for both parties.

when I did my timing belt and water pump and all belts my bill was $765 Canadian, so add on head gasket and clutch, probably over 2g's easy

The following is an estimate for the repair that you requested. This is about what you would expect to pay in my area for these repairs. Any estimate that is more than a hundred dollars or so than this would be too much to pay, in my opinion.

Replace clutch 5.6 HRS
Replace head gasket 8.0 HRS
Replace timing belt 2.1 HRS (when included w/ head gasket)
Replace water pump 1.0 HRS (" ")

Shop supplies $10.50
Labor $75 Per Hour

Total Parts $10.50 Customer Supplied Hard Parts
Total Labor 16.7 HRS @ $75 = $1252.50

Sub-Total $1252.00 + 87.68(TAX)

Total $1340.18

In my area, if you allow the shop to order the parts then they usually give you a break on labor since they are making a profit on the labor AND the parts. Keep in mind that this is just an estimate (on the high side) and that you should be able to negotiate the price with most shops. Best of luck.

(readjusted estimate)

That should be way less, since it's 5 minutes when doing the t-belt. Other than that, sounds about right.

Readjusted the estimate to reflect your suggestion. Changed Replace water pump to 1 HR instead of 3 HRS. I had estimated on the high side to show the max a repair of this type should cost.

called around a bit, only places that could give me estimates where ones that charged by the job, the hourly ones said they had never worked on a AWD talon or eclipse so they dunno hwo much because of how long..

so far i got
clutch 400
head gasket 300
timing belt 300

maybe i can talk one hsop down a bit since they are doing all the work and get it for liek 800ish.

lets hope.

You definitely want to find a shop that will give you a firm price and give you an estimated time. If you allow someone to charge by the hour and not give you a price then you are really at their mercy. They can tell you "it was a really hard job", or "it took longer than we expected" and just jack the price up quite a bit. Get whatever shop you use to give you a firm price first before you let them do any work on your car and get it in writing.

Yeah thanks guys, i would never get it worked on without a written estimate anyway.

Thanks chaos but i purchased an ACT 2100 earlier today. im not going for some outrageious 400+hp builds or what not, im shootin for about 300 and act rates their 2100 at that. will go with OEM parts for headgasket and timing belt replacement, since everyone says they hold up pretty well.

I would also suggest getting your best price on parts that you haven't already purchased and comparing them with prices that the shop gives you if they get the parts for you. You may actually be able to save some money that way because the shop should get it at a wholesale price and even with their mark-up you may be paying less for at least some of the items. Pick and choose which things they should purchase and which items you can get a better price on to maximize your savings.
I also find that if you tell the shop that if they give you a good price and perform quality work that you will recommend them to your friends and associates that the shop is more inclined to give you a better price in the hopes that they will get some referrals. Nothing is better advertisement than word of mouth, it's free. Keep us updated on the prices you get.
