I think i may start saving for a cat-back exhaust and i was wondering if i got a strait threw test pipe if it would give me a good gain?

from what I hear...yes. but you might notice some smoking...my friend removed his and his car started spewing blue smoke

Blue smoke normally means your burning oil. Your friend might want to check that.

If you get any smoke from no cat it would be black, carbon not being srubbed out by the cat. You'll also notice it will smell a bit funky due to no cat.

he is burning oil...just after the removal of the cat the smoking was much more noticeable

Yea a Stright pipe would be better for power. But if you have emissions laws then look as a high flow cat. Just a little FYI: Noticed you are saving up for a catback but to get some real gains you are gonna need a matching down pipe. Getting a catback won't really do anything if you have the stock dp. Just something to keep in mind so you don't have to keep messin with the exhaust.

I don't have a cat anymore. I don't get any smoke out the back, but like someone else said you will notice a smell from the car. You'll smell the exhaust a lot more. Not too bothersome, but you will notice it when you first start the car and windows are down.

When you take stock exhaust off, make sure you keep it. That way when emissions do come around you can bolt it back on for the emissions. When its done just swap in the new exhaust again.

with my test pipe w/ a stock exhaust i blew a good amount of black smoke which is normal, and i could smeel fuel in my exhaust.

it will help alot to get rid of you cat, they restrict alot of flow, and turbos live on exhaust flow.

yeah if you can't affourd a full exhaust yet, just start off with what you can get, but be sure to get the dp and a o2 housing too, thats when you will feel a big differance.

also i recomend 3 inch, i see alot of guys selling their 2 1/2's to get a 3", just do it right the first time.

I barely noticed a difference between straight pipe and 3" hi-flow cat...to me the difference isn't worth risking a $2,500 fine for removal of the CAT.

I noticed a huge difference... then again, if you read my mods, my cat was the last thing I did to the car... LOL. Yes, it makes a difference. Yes, you risk tripping the check engine light. Yes, there are fixes for that. No, not everyone gets smoke from it.

I still don't have a downpipe, i'm getting the rnr 2.5 in o2 eliminator over summer. But with catback i noticed a big difference then with testpipe i noticed even more of a difference than the catback alone. So far the testpipe is the best bang for the buck hp i have added to my car. Sure it smells like a racecar but i sounds alot better and it gives you more POWER!

This is good news for me.

well i put in a test pipe at the local muffler shop he just took the cat out and welded a pipe in but it makes this terrible zing now and sounds like a kazoo. what should i do i have a good exhaust its a hks sport cat back with pace setter header and slowboy cold air intake, it just sound terrible now is there a chance exhaust is escaping through the test pipe making this noise or what i think it sounds so bad now iam embarassed to drive it.

Which car are you talking about??? Your profile says Laser RSturbo. We don't have headers or cold air intake. From what you are saying you are talking about a N/T car. If so then that's how N/T cars sound when you mod the exhaust. Friend has a car like that.

If you go with the straight pipe, flange it, and flange your cat so that when you have emission tests done you could swap it back and forth... that is what i do now....:talon: :thumb: :talon:
