removing muffler silencer

Hey guys, I just put on a srs catback yesterday and ive been trying to remove the silencer but it just wont budge. Ive soaked it with wd40 and that didnt help. Do u guys have any suggestions on how to easily remove it?

Mine had 2 screws and it pops out...

Post a picture of what you are dealing with...if you bought it used or had it installed by an "inexperienced" muffler shop the silencer might have need tac welded...just a thought

If the issue is indeed rust wd-40 is a really crappy penetrant. Get something like PB Blaster instead as it's infinitely more effective.

My guess though is screws/bolts like the others suggested

If it actually is the screws that won't budge, just carefully take an angle grinder to them and pull the silencer out. Try not to hit the muffler, and take your time.

I bought Cx racing exhuast from ebay and the silencer was stuck in tight as a dolphins a** hole. I ended up drilling holes in it then using something to get behind it and pull it out. Which ended up being a waste of time because I ended up cutting the muffler off and doing a custom 3.5in tip.

Apex'i makes a removal tool, but you can probably just straighten out a coat hanger, make a hook at the end, insert it into the silencer and hook it on the inside, and then yank it out.

It's not welded in. I took a pair of cheap wire strippers (I imagine a good pair of pliers would work too) and opened them in the small pipe and yanked a couple times, and it came out. It takes a minute or two to get that out, but it will come out.

A slide hammer with the hook style end is the easiest way to get the silencers out when they are stuck really tight.

Any kind of hook should do. I use a "modded" wire coat hanger to pull mine out.

I just tried with a wire hanger pulling the hanger, with my feet on the muffler. I also had liquid wrench around the silencer and it wouldnt budge. Im going to see if I can get a slide hammer later.

One thing i noticed when i received my Apexi N1; turn the silencer to the right or the left and pull it out. I may be incorrect but the reason why pulling it out and got it out by using some sort of pliers is because after struggling you have made enough movment where it made the turn and pulling it out was a piece of cake.

Just the same if you were changing your tail blubs.

Another quick question. What is the bolt size of the bolt that connects the exhaust to the hanger?

It is a M8-1.25 x 40mm hex head flange bolt.

These worked on every mount except the last rubber mount that connects to the back of the muffler. On my car that rubber mount was thicker than the rest and required a longer bolt than the others.

Try twisting and pulling to break the silencer loose. Also some free all would work. Best lubricant i ever used. Works great with rust.

i haven't tried to remove the silencer but i did order a tool off ebay to remove it. it basically is a hook like what i made with a metal hanger but better material hopefully this will work
