I bought a project car and its already got the head removed. All electrical stuff is removed.

I live in a subdivision and they despise working on cars LOL ROFL

so just wanna make sure I go into removing the block with as much info as possible.

So my question is, I dont need to actually remove the transmission from the car do I?

Its a TSi AWD.

Thanks.

You techincally don't need to, but realisticly yes you basically do. It's damn tight squeeze to get the damn thing out of there. But thats just my own opinion...

To me it is alot easier to pull the motor and trans at the same time!

Would unbolting it and dropping it some suffice?
Or is complete removal necessary?

as you can probably tell there are greatly differing opinions, all of which are fine, however, it is always good to make sure your t/o bearing and clutch and shit are all still good. I mean while your down there, right?! haha

The easiest way is to put the engine and transmission on a heavy duty work bench, then unbolt the crossmember, and lift the car while letting the engine/trans assembly remain on the bench. That's how I always do it, and it's so easy that I can have it out before the engine cools.

If you try to pull it out the top it's a total pain, and you'll have to remove the trasfer case to pull the whole assembly out the top.

Thanks again guys. But a lot of people are saying removing the tranny is good since you'll need to check it.

My tranny is fine. I'm just swapping in my built block.

And if I pull the trans I'd have to take out front axles and what not as well right?

And lastly, when you say work bench. What are you talking about? When I think work bench I think of like a counter. But by the way you are talking it sounds like something that would sit under the car as I lift the car up.

Would a cherry picker be ok to life the front of the car up with to do that?
I know this one is rated to 2tons.

If you think your tranny is fine and doesnt need to be checked out than thats up to you its your car. Most would just take it out to make sure. And when taking it out you would have to remove the front axles which you can hammer out with a piece of board and hammer, now taking those out can sometimes suck! Your gonna want to take the axles off first though before remvoing any tranny bolts b/c if itsw binded up at all the tranny wont come out. As for the work bench, its something (n**ger-rig'd) so when you lift the car you can slide everything out.
