I always look on ebay and see a ton of eclipses, with like 300hp to the wheels.... they claim its reliable but of course, its the sellers opinion...

I have an RS now, and am currently selling it, and then hopefully have a profit of 13,000, with a deal with my parents for college.

Should i buy a stock GST and do everything to it myself, even thought its much more expensive?

or should i just go ahead and grab a 300hp GST and cross my fingers that its reliable..

after reading all of the threads, it seems like once you get past 275hp, the car will not be as reliable like an everyday driver that i want.

Or should i get a newer, 2000+ car that has less miles, and is obviosuly has a less risk of breaking on me....?

suggestions..?

basically as soon as you start modding a car, things start breaking. this is mostly because you are putting aftermarket/more powerfull parts on an older engine and it leads to other things breaking from old age. you CAN have a modded car thats just as reliable as a stock car though. proper tune up/maintenance is required though.

A lot of it has to do with how you drive it. If you launch it all the time, go WOT half the time you drive it, it will have a higher chance of something breaking than if you were to baby it around.

Be very picky the car I got a 95 gsx was stock but still had got a nice @#$ kicking,if you dont know what to look for its a great idea to take it to a honest shop and have them check stuff out before you buy it,and if the owner doesnt want to then its a good chance it was drove hard

IMHO buying an already modded car is just asking for trouble...It would have to come from a super credible source for me to consider it...Plus doing all the modding/work yourself teaches you things your going to need to know when owning a DSM... :thumb:

in my opinion you should buy a car with none or as little mods as possible. I bought mine with a few, i think there are upsides and downsides to both.

for instance, I drive my car harder than the average old person would, but i sure keep up with maintenance better than the average old person would. Also, im very particular that the oil is changed within 3000 miles, i use a 6 bolt filter for better oil filtering, and i drive my car like a performance car, but i pamper the crap out of it at the same time, id rather buy a car from someone like myself than the "avearage old person". Often times good cars come from people who truly cared about the car and therefore took care of their car.

My 96 GST came with:
frame bends
a mouse trying to bore a hole in the filter in the airbox
a clogged cat
a pretty worn out T-25
mouse poop surrounded by bundles of carpet insulation all over along with a slight hint of mouse urine from the vents if you turn them to the right setting (well covered by air fresheners)
bad 1-2 synchros and a 2-3 that wasn't very happy
the speakers all in the reverse locations
strange wiring all over the car and a poorly installed sunroof that died 1 day after I got it
slightly bad pass tie rod end
a front end that had all the bolts replaced with poor very rust prone ones
the 7-bolt got rod knock about 3 months later

and a bunch of other stupid crap...... it was driven by an older gentleman who has owned 8 eclipses for 40k, and a girl (20k) who I'm now pretty sure is beating the f^ck out of her new 04 spyder that she bought with the money that I feel she ripped off of me.... but thats only for the accident she didn't tell me about and the motor she beat to hell.... the rest of it should have been a good clue for me though

shucks to a mechanic who took my $50 for an inspection and probably just took the car for a joyride or something... make sure YOU know alot before you buy the car and/or have a VERY reliable mechanic ... and to think I paid $500 over blue book since it was in such "primo" condition

granted... if I would have gotten the car for less I would have been happier since I planned on upgrading alot of parts and giving it some love.... but be careful

(by the way, 2000 miles strong on my new 6 bolt and just took out a 5.0 and ran with a 911 turbo last night)
