These cars are not known to be the most reliable.

"people often say maintenance is key"

other than the 2g crank walk what other issues occur with these cars?

Crank walk is a mystery, The thing is you don't hear about the people not having crank walk problems you only hear about them that do, why this occurs, no one really knows. People have gone to many lengths to finding this out, and what they came up with is, poorly maintenance, clogged oil-squirters, check valves, and poorly designed thrust bearing, badly machined blocks with misaligned main bearings, badly machined crankshafts or poor crankshaft heat treating, bad clutch adjustment, heavy aftermarket clutch pressure plates. This can be usually avoided with careful rebuilds. If you do have an early 7-bolt find the best bearings you can. And also 98' Mitsubishi changed there thrust bearings to a 4 piece design from the original 2 piece design, this allows them to float and self align, and these have vary few bearing failures. If you ever heard the book How To Build Max-Performance Mitsubishi 4G63t Engines it's a must and you should read it, It just came out not to long ago and is the bestest book ever. Thats where I got this info from. goodluck

Good comments above by sKeeT007. If you can be meticulous on any changes and re-builds, and perform all required maintenance, it greatly reduces the risk of issues.
