Hi guys, my car is an all-stock RS, but I'm going to start doing some mods to it. Right now I just use regular unleaded gas, but when should I start going up in the octane? After intake/exhaust, or beyond that? I don't want to screw up my engine ;) but I don't want to have to shell out more cash on fuel than I do now. I know, I'm a cheap bastage. :)

Well, I had a business trip this morning and here is what I got:

5.25 gallons of gas went for just 95 miles.

That equals 18.09mpg HIGHWAY miles. It should be more like 24-25.

What else can I replace....let's see.......

Well, considering that the 90-92 for sure as well as the 2Gs do, I see no reason why ALL DSMs wouldn't have the ground strap, which is just a braided steel wire about a half inch wide that runs from the frame of the car to the exhaust. Even if you don't have one now, I can't imagine that it would cost much to get one.

When you guys were talking about it initially, I thought you were talking about a ground wire from the O2 sensor itself! There obviously wasn't one on the O2 sensor as I just did this yesterday.

I did not, however, find a ground strap in that area. Anyone have a picture where it is located?

Thank you,

Gary

Well, I played around with the DSM tonight and did find the ground strap. It was connected though, so it seems that wasn't the issue. I also checked for any loose connectors and such and did find any.

Also, this plugs on this car, fuel pump, and timing belt have all been replaced in the last 2 months so it's not those.

Wires? maybe. TPS sensor? MAS sensor? The fact that I am getting crappier gas mileage then an Escalade? Yep! I could be rollin' on dubs for cheaper!

I have a non turbo and get the worse gas mileage ever.I used to get really good gas mileage I think i can go about 200 miles or a lil more on a tank of gas. It sucks and I hate it. Gas is soo expensive up here now. It did about a 25cent raise in 3 days. If anyone knows what I could do to figure out this problem it would be greatly appriciated.

Well, I am going to try something tonight like another guy did. Put a different ground on by the sensor. I bought a metal strap like the one on the downpipe and I am going to ground it to a different area. Even if this does not help at least it was cheap to do! :D

Will update you when finshed.

Right now im getting less than 10 mpg. I'm guessing that it's because I'm not recirculationg the bov, i know i should but i just made a cool intake pipe and there's no place to vent it. oh yeah, i didn't recirc the bov on my 2g, got crappy mileage, recirculated it and got like 50 miles more on the tank

a couple weeks back my engine decided that it didn't need the timing belt idler roller anymore. guess its time to get the head worked!! :barf:

anyone with some advice, it's greatly appreciated. trust

the first time i got on this site i read the quote, "DSM's...turning ordinary people into mechanics since 1990." at first i thought  ... but now it's like  good thing i only live five miles from work, but i can't wait to get rid of the blisters on my feet!!!

I usually use premium because the octanes that we have up here are 87, 89, and 93. And it all expensive. Average price here in WV is about $1.42 a gallon. I have to buy gas for my car every week. So i figure im spending about $30-40 a week for gas. My car is really really bad on gas... maybe because im heavy footed. I really need a job.

DAMNN!! you are lucky. Im from the seattle area and our average is about $2.15 a gallon.....no fair.

$1.91 for premium here in NY. I just fill my 2.0 NT with regular now for $1.76!! I was paying that for premium a couple of months ago. I don't see any performance decrease though by going with 87 over 93. Weird. It says in the manual t he DOHC engines use 91 octane. What does a detonation sound like? I have a ticking noise under the hood (probably lifter tick)

Ok, anyone who has a n/t, quit wasting your money on premium fuel. You should be running 87 octane, unless you ping with it, then run 89. Running higher octane WILL NOT give you any more power.

Also, to anyone using octane boosters, instead of throwing your money away on that, paypal me the money and I will make a cd that has turbo and bov sounds. You can then play that in your radio and sound like you are fast. Octane boosters dont do anything on a car that CAN take advantage of the extra octane, much less on a car that cant.

If you want to use premium gasoline and higher octane fuels, then buy a high compression motor or a turbo car, and then go buy race gas.

Wow, Awd you are paying the same as me and the refinery is in my city(Edmonton). As well it just came down a little it was up to 91.5 per liter of 92. Oh and a note you can generally get 93 octane at mohawk stations if there is one in lethbridge it has been a while since I was there so I can't remember.

AWD, unless you've converted to US already, then you're not too high priced... ($2.14 / gal for premium - .62US=1CAN per finance.yahoo)

I've seen highs of $2.50 in Chicago in the last few weeks, but city stations are always brutally high.

Europe prices are way higher, even excluding half of their taxes...

If you had already stated in US $, then by all means you're right and we can stop whining...
