I had a steady tapping/clicking noise pop up in my rear end today, it was kinda weird that i heard a noise over a bump that was a semi-loud click or pop from the rear and then within about a half mile i noticed a steady tapping noise from the rear driveline. I'm not 100% positive on what it is but i found what to me is a LOT of play in the inner rear CV joints on both sides.

I was wondering if you can buy rebuild kits for them these days? I know a long time ago you could get a new boot and even the 3-way piece with the bearings on it that goes on the shaft and slips into the cup. If i weren't so broke i'd replace the entire axle and be done with it but for now i'm looking for "budget minded" solutions.

I can't be 100% positive that the noise is from the CV's but they are something that needs fixed anyway and will eliminate that rfom the equation. The carrier bearings are actually good, there's no slop in the at all, and although i'm sure it could stand to be replaced the U-joint is "tight" or not sloppy at all (it should be replaced as well due to age alone)

I drove the car a second time to turn it around in the driveway and the noise wasn't as prominent but it was still there (i'm not hoping it will magiacally go away, I'm just stating the facts i've observed LOL )

Also is there a way to check the health of the rear LSD? with the driveshaft heald still one wheel will go the opposite way of the one you turn by hand but that should be fine untill the diff locks, but i'm not sure what it takes to get it to lock both in the same direction on a DSM on jack stands..any help there would be great.

update: found an odd-ball part that's at least been causing a few of my issues

While taking things apart i was playing with rocking the wheels back and forth and on one side inoticed that the brake disk wasn't tied tieghtly tothe wheel as if the wheel weren't tight. Well the wheel was tight and then i noticed this piece here, nbot sure what it was for but it sure isn't for DSM's

it was causing the wheel to not seat properly and since chiseling it oiff the "squeek" i thought was a bad U-joint bearing has dissapeared along with a few other noises. Also the noise that i started to investigate that started this thread is gone as well :)

happy times but i know i have to replace some CV's anyway at this point, there's just toomuch wear tto turn a blind eye to :(

I too have a clicking type of noise coming from my rear end and Im pretty damn sure its the axles (almost 200K on those suckers).
Are you looking to rebuild the axles yourself or have someone do that? Because there are many places that can rebuild axles for you for a decent price. For instance, theres a place near me in jersey here called the axle exchange and they rebuild axles and are quite good actually; they balanced my driveshaft when I rebuilt it last spring.

As far as the lsd check, the FSM says to jack up the rear end or put car on a lift and disconnect the driveshaft at the rear pinion and spin the rear tires, if they spin the same direction, your lsd is fine.

I'm looking to rebuild them myself, I use to rebuild CV's all the time when i worked as a wrench in small shop for a few years. It just seems that you can't find the parts these days like you could 10 years ago.

Since finding the ring in the update above a LOT of things have gotten quieter (can't believe i didn't notice this when i did the AWD swap) but i think i was using the logic that the parts i had were directly off a DSM so they all should have been correct to start with. The only reason i can think of that this ring would have been on there is that some one had put aftermarket rims on the car the parts came from and the ring was included with the wheels to make sure they centered correctly (a friend told me that some aftermarket wheels come with them because of the larger center bore in the rim)

Good find glenn! Yea that is definitely a rim centering ring, because it measures out at just less than 73mm and thats what a lot of aftermarket rims have a hub center bore.

And yes, I agree with you that you cant find the parts nowadays that were abundant years ago. It honestly sucks. A friend and I were actually talking about that today, his friend needed a 1g rear 4 bolt axle and nobody has the parts to rebuild it. Who knows though, maybe some guy somewhere has a surplus of these parts in the back room of his warehouse and has no clue they're even there; which in that case he needs to find them and sell them to us for a major discounted price :sneaky:

Hmmm.. I wonder why there was only one on the right side? Both rear hubs were off the same car, maybe one fell off and this one was stuck on with rust *shrugs*

Either way it's nice to have the main noise i was after as well as another one that was just nnoying be gone at this point. But now i have another part to start saving money for (rear CV's) And man, if some one does have a stash of CV rebuild kits that would be nice.. these "kids" working at parts storesthese days have no idea what one even is, their idea of a "rebuild" is a new boot and grease LOL. I wonder if their idea of an engine rebuild is a new valve cover gasket and a oil change?? LOL

you can get the parts from JNZTuning.com, I have gotten complete rebuild kits with cup, tripod bearing, grease, boots and clamps. I have also just gotten boots and clamps.

Those centering rings do get really stuck and they also end up with a lot of rust underneath them, making it very hard to put a factory wheel back on. I just learned that when I got a set of used EVO9 wheels.

exactly what i needed thanks for that link@!@

damn i can't get it without the cup making it a 382 dollar part, that's almost new complete rear CV"s LOL

I'm just looking for the bearing part the 3-way looking piece with the rollers on it
