I'm going to replace the rear main seal. Is there any particular problems I should be aware of ahead of time? Any headaches? Just looking for a heads up. Also, is it easier to take the engine out the bottom or top? i can do either just trying to save time. Dont want to spend all day with a cherry picker if it only takes an hour to drop it out the bottom.

Take it out the top. Leave the tranny in the car.

You don't need the specialty tool shown in the FSM to install the new seal. Make sure it's flat and gently tap it in with hammer. It needs to be just a hair *above* flush. If you pound it in flush, it will leak on you.

If you have a lift, then take it out the bottom. Soooooo much easier. Once the engine is out, no more headache.

i have access to a lift but would prefer to do it in my own garage if at all possible
dr leave the seal out from flush is this so the tranny can flatten it for better seal?

The seal is barely rounded with the tinyest bit of a lip on the outside end. which helps in the sealing process.. The seal will actually look flush almost, its really just a hair out. The seal will settle in niceley on its own if installed correctly.

BTW. When i did my rebuild i completely had the motor installed tranny attached and when i fired it up oil was running out super fast. then i realized i never put the rear main seal in when reassembling. OMG . I just dropped the transaxle itself left the motor in the car and put the seal in. If u dont have a tranny jack u will need 2 people to do it this way.

edit: just looked at post date sorry!
