I have searched a ton and can't find anything on rear end noise like I am having.... I get a whrrrr noise all the time, acceleration and cruise/decel. I do have solid aluminum rear diff bushings.

Now when I shift or i suddenly let off the gas (when rear end transfers what is driving it...)(motor or coast...) It makes a few soft clacking noises... like clack clack... I lifted the car up and all u-joints feel new, the pinion has no play. I can turn the rear end a little back and forth and simulate the noise.

I think the rear end was improperly shimmed, can anyone confirm this? the previous owner rebuilt the rear end...

Also when I turn full lock the inside tire always tries to lock up, like er er er er../...

I had similar noises when the thrust washers on the spider gears disintegrated in the rear end. Try changing the fluid and see if any particles come out. The solid bushings will transmit more noise but the tire locking up is a problem.

I think the tire locking when I turn full lock is because it is a LSD rear end and the center diff has been welded. I will change rear end fluid asap. What should I use for fluid?

I always use a synthetic fluid and I think the spec for the rear differential is GL5 75W90. Redline and Mobil1 are what I use but there are a lot of good oils out there. I would think a welded center diff is going to put a lot more strain on your front and rear differentials. Your tire noise could be the car trying to crow hop due to the locked differential. I've never run locked on a dsm but have accidentally done it in a Jeep.

You'll need 1 quart for the rear differential change.

My symptom noises are exactly the same minus the wirring noise only difference is I have the polyurathane bushings instead of the aluminum. Whirring noise is usually a diff that is too tight, if you never took it apart I can't see how that would be a problem, but if the pinion depth is not enough it could be a little tight. I just figure it is the bushings and nothing is moving around as it use to. I just ignore it now, it doesn't seem to be a real problem. AWD cars have always been noisy, so many joints and moving pieces they are just going to make noise. Also, my rear diff has been reset by Shep so that thing is tip top.
