My 90 AWD has been pissing me off nonstop ever since I got it a few months ago. 1st and 2nd grind like crazy, but I can put them in gear with the car off and I won't have any grinding... but now I have another problem. I can't get into any gears with the car running. with the car off everything moves just fine, but the only gears that grind are 1st and 2nd. the other gears the shifter won't move there. I've done a lot of work trying to fix the grinding and shifting problems, but I haven't had any success. I've replaced the clutch, clutch fork, throw out bearing, master cylinder, shift cables (skateboard bearing mod). I've adjusted the clutch and shift linkage. please help me out here. I can't afford to keep replacing and fixing everything on a car I can't use.

okay. So I am having the same problem. I purchased the car and did the clutch right away about 4500 miles ago. I am getting these weird shifting problems occasionally. today it got really bad. If the car is off it works just fine. When the car is on that's a whole different story. My clutch engages and disenages just fine. But my gearshift will not let me go into to gear very easily. HELP!!! Just bough a brand new turbo with intake and all that fun stuff... Want that in there. But if my car is not working dont want to waste my time.

well, what have you done already as far as adjusting? just a specific gear or all of them? any grinding noises yet?

Have you checked the actual clutch pedal assembly yet?? They wear and eventually need to be replaced or you need to move the pedal to it's foreward most movement and weld the rod to the nut on the end to get rid of the "play".

I had problems with my car like this once. My fix was shimming a new pivot ball, new clutch fork, new pressure plate, new disc, new OEM TOB (very important it be OEM), extended slave cylinder, welded clutch pedal assembly, new slave and master cylinders, and a braided SS line.

Good luck.

transmission is in, along with a ton of other new parts. the new ACT unsprung clutch is working pretty good and I installed power steering (finally!). I've got a little more work to do before its fully roadworthy, but it's close. I'm seriously considering selling this thing by the end of the year. all this car has done is cost me tons of money and I haven't hardly driven it. The way I see it, the longer I keep this thing, the more money I'm going to spend just keeping it driveable/sellable. Unless it starts being reliable, but that's unlikely.

That is what happens when you buy a 20 year old car, your going to have problems. That is all part of DSM's no matter what DSM it is, you can't expect to mod a car either and not have problems. You have to pay to play.

yea, i know, it's a 1990, its pretty old and things are gonna break. Its just something for me to think about. I would think it should be able to be a part time daily driver though. I'm afraid to drive this thing because it breaks so much. time will tell though, maybe I've got the really bad stuff taken care of for a while and anything else that breaks will be just minor details.

You know something, I have a 95 GST and I have been spending money for things I had no intention on buying. I had to replace both front axles when I replaced the tranny because the originals were in there so long they became rust welded to the hubs. After beating the crap out of the axles because they wouldn't come out i destroyed the front hubs! After the great tranny, hub and axle adventure I drove for about 2 months and my left lower ball joint broke while driving the car! That failure caused the front tire to fall into the fender which caused me to block up traffic on the way to work one morning. I had to pay a towing company $200 to get the car back home! After that adventure I purchased a whole front end rebuild assemble. The kit was $400 and it included new ball jointsassemblies (2 lower control arms, 2 curved lower control arms) I replaced the tie rods, the upper ball joint assembly and I replaced my left axle ( It was damaged when the lower straight arm ball joint failed). The total for everything was $700 (wheel alignment, front end kit, towing and left front axle), That was on STUFF I did not plan on buying! When I checked the rear, all the rubber bushings are shot as well! I didn't do that yet but i know I need to! To make a long story short, We own old cars and the maintenance is a must! One thing I must say is this, with my 95 GST Whenever I mash the throttle to the floor and my HANH Super Turbo 20G kicks in with 20 lbs of boost... The smile on my face is priceless!
Fix your car... all of your car..... and mod the thing in between... you will be hauling butt before you know it and you will have a reliable car.... :hellyeah:
