Re-ring, What do to about rod bolts?

Im about to re ring a motor and put new bearings in it. Would the rod bolts need to be replaced?

If you get the arp rod bolts make sure to have the rods resized.

Yeah, then while your their you might as well get a new crank and maybe even think about a new block. You are sounding exactly like someone that i work with, here is an example of this type of thinking: A customer will bring in a atv and want an oil leak fixed and the atv "gone over" for the summer. The problem with the leak will be an oil seal, and this guy will end up pulling the crank and valves out of this thing (and i'm not joking one bit here) because "i noticed while i was replacing your oil seal that your crank had some wear on it, so i pulled it out and then since i had to take the head off to get the crank out i noticed that your valves are badly worn so i removed them and ordered new ones" This is when the customer goes ape sh1t over a bill for like $1500 when all they wanted was the oil leak fixed and a tune up on a 10 year old atv worth $500. "But they said they wanted it gone over" Learn to leave well enough alone, if the guy is doing a build up and is asking if arp bolts are worth it then sure, advise he get arp bolts, otherwise dont be one of "those" show and tell people as i like to call the guy at work. Some people just never got past the 5 year old tearing every part from a toy just to see if they can find something "good" inside it. Btw does anyone else know anybody like this??? It must make some people feel smart to tear more stuff apart i guess, i dont know.

Ya but if the rods are already out it is a good idea to put arp rob bolts on and have the rod resized its not any extra work but bringing it to a machine shop.

Just wondering...I looked around but all I found was putting the ARP or whatever in.

I dont really have the money for those...And I dont want to have to bore out the hole or whatever it is that Id have to do...

So can I just reuse the ones I got? They seem fine....

First off, are you talking about Head Studs, or rod bolts -- quite different locations on the engine. Your post is just a little difficult to read.

Either way, I would reccomend NOT EVER reusing stock head bolts or rod bolts -- head bolts will stretch. Rod bolts are also under enough stress all the time to have stretch. Personally, if you are doing an engine rebuild, I would reccomend using new hardware. If you want, it is your choice to reuse rod bolts--they are still prone to stretching, as well they have been heat cycled and oil-soaked since their original installation -- they will be more brittle than when they were manufactured -- do you want to trust their strength?

If you cannot afford ARP head studs, or stock NEW Mitsubishi rod bolts, SAVE UP FOR THEM. You will regret reusing either one. They both require an exact torque spec, and reused bolts are not reliable in either application. It is like reusing a composite head gasket -- it was designed to not be reused.

You can get ARP head studs at www.importperformanceparts.net (flatlander racing) -- they are one of the cheapest ARP suppliers out there because they are ARP's largest distributor. They are $85 for the headstuds for your application. Their rod bolts are $39. Again, if you own a DSM, both items are definitely reccomended as being the cheapest insurance you will ever purchase.

He is obviously talking about rod bolts since that is what the thread says. You can use stock rod bolts with no problem. I have reused them many times in DSM's and dozens more in other motors. They stretch but in a different manner than head bolts.

Ill most likely try to get some new head bolts, but the rod bolts look like there in excellant shape. The car only has 81k on it, and someone has been in there before I think.

If you have head studs, then you can. The bolts tourque to yeild as im sure you already know. You cannot reuse them. You can, but your motor will fry.

I personally do NOT reuse any critical bolts...........head, rod, main, or flywheel. To me it's cheaper to replace the bolts than to replace what will be trash if the bolts decide it's time to die.

Other have, and evidently with positive results, but I would not reuse them myself.

And yes, head bolts are "torque-to-yield" and can NOT be reused.

Studs are usually OK to reuse.

yup.. the rod needs to be reconned after new rod bolts are installed...

i often wonder how many engines blow up from not taking this step...

Sure if you already have it apart and it does'nt already have arp bolts in it, then you might want to put them in and have the big end honed.

I would replace with arp rod bolts, and always tighten by stretch not torque. Way more accurate but hey thats just me. I would personally never use arp main's, I use arp for everything else though.

Six bolt head bolts are not torque-to-yield. You can reuse them a "few" times. I wouldn't use them more than 2-3 times before replacing them. I'd also check and see if the fsm has anything to say about checking them out like it does for the rod bolts. I am a firm believer in new fasteners but unless it is something that NEEDS to be replaced every time, most of these fasteners have a good couple of torque/loosen cycles in them before they really start to stretch and stop doing their jobs. If they are old stock parts and you don't know how many times they may have been reused, then maybe it's worth it, just a judgement call.
