Hey all, ive currently got an open J-pipe which dumps to the atmosphere, I have seen folks that use the recirculating system on their turbo's, anyone know the pro's and con's of these types of systems, and also if its worth looking into? Thanks!

I think you have your terminology mixed up.

J-Piper refers to the piping coming off of TD05 Style turbos. It allows for the charged air to be directed downward allowing better routing for sidemounts or FMIC.

There are many styles of J pipe on the market....many

I think you are talking about recirculating exhaust gasses from the wastegate flapper port. This is referred to "dummping" the wastegate, or O2 dump. The part is also called a o2 housing or wastegate housing, not a J-pipe.

Are you talking about the BOV? Or the exhaust? IF the exhaust gets really loud when you hit boost, that is an wastegate (exhaust) dump. If when you shift you hear a loud *PHSSS* shound, that is your BOV

agentorange313 you beat me to the punch.

If this is the wastegate dump you are talking about there have been many conversations about recirculating the wastegate back into the exhaust or dumping it. Basically ppl say if you dump it to the atmosphere it will net you some more HP. If you hate the sound of it you can plum it back into the exhaust and it may rob some HP. Hope this helps.

But other than just the hp gains, and excessively loud noise, sounds like my engine is breaking when i hit the gas LOL. What part would i be looking for if i wanted to re-rout into the exhaust?

hold on a sec, ill get some photo's

Here we go, sorry the pics arent the greatest, its really sunny outside LOL. 3rd pic shows the dump tube, now is this something that would have been stock with the turbo? or would it be aftermarket?

Ok, ill look into the o2 housing units that recirculate, i couldn't care about a few hp for now, but i just cant stand being deafened when i hit the gas LOL. Also, how much would something like this go for? I wouldnt hold onto it, better to let someone who wants that kinda noise have it LOL

Im pretty happy with the BOV for the most part. Just not sure what manufacturer it is that made it. No markings on it at all that indicate maker.

Also, while ive got the experts here, the exhaust manifold, is that stock? I dont see why the previous owner would go with an aftermarket turbo, and stick with the stock exhaust mani. Ideas?

From what i can tell the intake pipe from the turbo is filtered, and the intake pipe from the intake mani is connected to a sidemount off of a 2jz supra from what the previous owner told me. It looks pretty new though.

Sorry if this all seems confusing to you guys, because it sure is to me. LOL. Trying to figure out what someone else did to your car is starting to make my head hurt LOL

what do you mean re-route back into the exhaust?WTF if you have the stock o2 housing then the o2 will be dumped back into the exhaust system and out the tail pipe. when you put a o2 housing with an o2 dump it allows the extra exhaust gases to be vented to the atmosphere, remember this "The faster the exhaust comes out, the faster you will go.":thumb: it sounds bad ass, and you might see some increase of power. hope this helped you my friend.

Nvm. looking at the second pic you put up. It looks like it has a cap on it and i was talking about where the recirculating tube would go from your bov to the intake pipe not the filter on the maf.

ahh ok. Glad the photo's help. So heres a question, the BOV is designed to vent excess intake pressures correct? Im trying to get my head around this, why is the BOV located on the intake manifold piping and not the intake piping from the turbo?

Its connected to your upper intercooler piping because that is where the compressed air is being "injected" into the intake mani and engine. No compressed air before the turbo :thumb:

The bov releases air pressure when you throttle plate closes to avoid throwing it back into the turbo causing compressor surge. You should probaably recirculate the bov back into the intake on the turbo, it is releasing metered air to the atmosphere causeing you to run rich between shifts, and possibly cause stalling problems when you hit the push the clutch in coming to a stop.

This thread provides one more reason to stop calling it a "blow-off valve." It isn't a blow-off valve; it's a compressor bypass valve or diverter valve.

Your exhaust manifold is stock. You will also want to recirtulate the BOV into the intake if possible. You are running rich everytime you shift.
