I have been searching for an awnser and found nothing that can help me. I have a 92 laser awd. The other day i was driving during the rain and when i got to the stop light and starting to take off i heard and extremely loud rattling during acceleration from the engine bay. I pulled over and didnt see anything loose or anything got back in took off and it went away. Next thing a know there is a popping sound from under the car as i am driving straight. I did it for thirty secounds and went away. I was traveling aprox 40mph. Also noticed the brake light was on and the ebrake was not engaged. I took the car home and havent drove it since any idea on what could be going on? Thanks for any help

Btw this problem seems to be intermittently

As for your brake light, check if there is still brake fluid in the reservoir.

As for the rattling sound, I had that and it seemed to be coming from the engine block, I pulled the oil pan and found my rear balance shaft bearing rattling about between my crankshaft and my front balance shaft.
But because I drove around with it to long my block got damaged so I had to eliminate the balance shafts instead of fixing the bearing.
So my advise is not to drive around with it for to long!

Look under the hood and play around with your throttle to see if can find a sweet spot where you can hear the sound, then try to find where it is coming from by moving your head around..
If it's coming from the top of the block pull the valve cover and so on.

Good luck!

I agree with Azrael. Although I have not had this issue, I agree with his troubleshooting steps.

Based off what you said, I believe you mean this happens while the car is in motion which leads me to believe it's drivetrain related.

I think you should check is your engine mounts. If one of them collapses or comes undone, it'll drop the engine slightly to whichever side the failed mount is on.

Being that this causes the engine to cante in one direction, it can put additional strain/stress on the CV axles, half-shaft and/or the transmission.

Also, check your clearances between the top of your tires and the bottom of your fenderwells. Make sure they are all uniform height. A collapsed strut will also cause this sound by again, putting additional strain on the axles.

Another check you can do is a freedom-of-rotation check on your wheels. Lift the front end and rotate the tires in forward driving direction. Check for binding, clicking, popping, and anything else that sticks out at you.

I just wanted to update this and let everyone know what was wrong. First the carrier bearings where popping. Second the rattling came from the excess amount of rain hitting the exhaust. I came across a thread on another forum that talked about during heavy rain there will be alot of exhaust vibrations. Mine only occurs during heavy rain and its diffently the exhaust. The exhaust is extremely hot and the water is causing it to cool extremely fast cause the vibrations and so on. Just thought i would share.
Thanks,
Tim
