Hey guys, did some searching with little luck.
Just finished rebuilding the motor on my brothers car (7 bolt, stock + no balance shafts)
Car: 95 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD, Stock 7 bolt.
We got the car fired, built oil pressure, and it idled rough. Traced a couple problems, but running into a weird scenario now:
It has trouble running under 2000 RPM's but sounds great above that and runs rich as shit. Plugs are black after maybe 5 total minutes of running, black smoke under boost.
No CEL's.
We bypassed the one valve and ran vacuum hose from the nipple on the turbo to the wastegate per some knowledgeable friends direction.
Everything is hooked up, builds boost so no boost leaks I presume. Don't see any more vacuum leaks. Sometimes it idles fine for a couple seconds upon startup then just... crappy. Sometimes while holding the throttle steady it will rev on its own then drop RPM's on it's own.
My only thoughts are a possible bad o2? Which is somewhat newer, or maybe old gas but we put some fuel stabilizer in it, at about a 1/4 tank.
Can you adjust base timing on it? No cam angle sensor..
