One more thing you should consider is some diodes. They will keep current going the right way. think of them like check valves. they also keep your DC voltage clean. Well im off to bed
 
I just cut the end off, pushed the wire under the dash by the windsheild and wired into the fuse box. Some people run it to a switch, i just spliced the wires into the "Security" wire after the fuse.
 
Make sure you don't count on the cigarette lighter fuse to protect the radar detector. It'll weld its guts solid before it lets go. The detector will want something like 3A.
