There not turning on the temp gauge never goes past half way, but when it rains or what not the hood steams. It has a newer coolent temp sensor
 
i know on the 1st gen, there is a switch on the bottom of the radiator, and thats what turns the fans on and off.... i hope your not overheating, but since u put in a new sender i think your ok.... i would pull the car into a garage turn it on and let it sit and watch it, id also feel the radiator hoses and see if they get really really hot..... umm, u know somethings wrong when u see bubbles in the catch tank like alot of bubbles
