Rack and pinion is shot. Upgrade?

So basically I was driving home, and all of a sudden I noticed play on the steering wheel. After driving for about a half hour, my left wheel started to curve outwards (right wheel was straight, left wheel was turned out). I also had to keep my steering wheel almost upside down to keep my car in a straight line. When I got to work, I threw the car on my lift. Nothing was bent or broken, so I figured my rack is bad. It's also leaking so I will need to replace it.

My question: Should I go with a free rebuilt rack that I can get through the business, or is their any "performance" rack/upgrade from my stock one that you guys know of?

Update: I took the rack and pinion out, the cross member turned out to be cracked.

Damn man, sounds kinda crappy. You're saying the subframe is cracked?

Wow, never heard of a subframe cracking(maybe in a rally race its happened). Put some poly mounts in when you replace that thing, may help.

Yeah it was the sub frame. I'll take pics tomorrow. I couldn't see the crack until I completely removed my rack. As for poly mounts, I needed the car running ASAP. I ordered stock ones from my local auto parts.

By the way, the car runs smoother then when I bought it. I guess its been cracked for a while, just now did the crack separate the sub frame into halves.

I broke 3 subframes Rack and pinion housings when i had my fwd eclipse so i went to an awd tallon. I dont know if u already replaced it but if possible i would try to replace it with a subframe from an awd since it has more braces. Its a sturdier subframe , and u need one especialy if your car has been modded and u r pushing lot more horsepower.....Just my opinion.
