The following questions are for the gurus of steering haha. My car has been down for well over a year but that was mainly due to me being out of commission for about 8 months due to neck surgery. I've finally gotten around to getting a new turbo and getting the engine running almost perfect. Now that I'm there I'm having a reoccurring and scary issue every time I get the car up to highway speeds (55+).
The issue that I'm having and have posted about on here is that at those speeds the car has a severe wandering problem, meaning the front end starts to move and it's very difficult to drive. I followed the advice of many people and replaced all tie rod parts, new rack bushings, new control arm bushings, etc, and got it all aligned to straight. Well I'm still having the same issue and I had a buddy of mine look at the car and he figures it is the rack and pinion because there is a knocking noise if you move the steering wheel back and forth, so the other night I removed it.
The pinion gear and rack gears looks pristine, and the power steering fluid that came out was clear and free of any metal. The tie rods are still essential brand new and the rack was tight on the car. Now the only obvious thing that has any movement is the rotary valve on the pinion gear but I can't find anything that says if this is supposed to be there or not. I'm talking very minute amount of movement but it is noticeable. The only other things that I think might be causing the wandering is the bearings that hold the pinion shaft, but they seem to be tight.
So my question is if anyone has any knowledge about the rotary valve and if it should have any movement. Any help at all would be appreciated as well.
Oh if you are reading this and wondering "Why not just get a new rack..." well the problem with that is that this particular rack is from an evo 1 and it's rhd haha. It's a mirage rack just with much better ratio and flipped so I'm thinking they share the same bearings and parts which would be awesome.
I'm just really frustrated at the this issue and maybe some one here knows some small amount of info that can push me in the right way. Thanks!
