So I'm sure this topic has been touched upon many times. I cannot get the axle to separate from the bearing. Anyone know of a good (cheap) source to pick up the knuckle, axle and backing plate for the emergency brakes? All the local auto parts stores dont list the rear axles either, what a PITA!!!

I think this is a Northern thing. Never had a 2g, but I know being in the north everything corrods/rusts together.

As long as you don't have abs you can get the outer cup from raxles. Once you unbolt the bearing from the knuckle you cam pop the axle out of the diff. Cut the clamp off the outer boot and cut the boot off. There is enough room to slide the outer axle cup out through the knuckle. Hammer off the outer cup and bearing together. The outer cup from raxles comes with cup, grease, boot, clamps, and a new nut. Just need to get a new bearing. Last I remember cup was around $120ish. Marty I think it is at raxles is a really great guy to deal with and he will know exactly what you are doing.

The only downside is you can't get a cup with the abs tone ring on it. I've been down this road a couple times.

It will save me a couple of bucks for sure, not having to replace the knuckle.

The thing that also sucks it getting used parts that are not rusted together here in New England.

I havent been able to find any other scrap yards midwest that sell Mitsu parts? Anyone have suggestions?

I am not sure where you got this information from, but the axle cup is too big in diameter to fit thru the hole in the spindle.

Not on the rear of a 2G it isn't. The boot will need to be removed, but the cup will pass through.

You would need just the hub and axle. I just did this last night.

You can get hubs from the dealership or a parts store. Going off memory, I believe I paid $220 each for my rear OE hubs. And as far as axles go, you won't find those at the dealership or parts store. You can by used ones in the classifieds, or buy DSMgraveyard's rear axle replacements, or buy them from driveshaftshop.com if you're building the car to make power.

I guess i didn't read that it was the rear, good call. For the rear hub assembly i would go to rockauto.com they are like 50 bucks.

The bearings are available at the part stores. Not the complete assy. Only OEM for those. JNZ has them for $160ish. Damn good price once you sit back an look at the situation.

Are you sure JNZ sells the hub and bearing assembly for that cheap? I thought it was well over $200 last time I checked. Got a link?

Right now rockauto.com has a sale on the gmb brand rear bearing with the retainer that bolts to the spindle but no hub. They are 20 bucks on sale. GMB Part # 7480112

Yeah, the hub seems to be the expensive part, and is primarily what needs to be replaced in this situation.

I called the dealer ask how much the axle cost, and it cost 400 bucks for it. i just got one from the classified section.

I called jnz about them a week ago. That's the price I was told. It's the same on the own part of there website also.

They've been discontinued for a while. Even though they can still price them to you, they can't actually order them anymore.

Curious, how do you actually seperate the joint from the axle? The know the side closest the dif just pops out....

All this stuff is crazy, I'm glad there are alternatives. If no one sold that "stub" axle we would be in tough shape...

I'm almost starting to think I should stock up on supplies before nothing is available anymore....

The outter joint? I'm not sure, as I've never tried. Why would you need to separate the outter joint?

I'm figuring since I cannot seperate the axle from the bearing, this was the way to go. Purchase a new hub bearing and cup, seperate the outer cup from the old axle and re-assemble. Am I heading in the right direction?

Ahh, I missed that part above. I don't know anything about replacing the outter cup only. If you can buy just the outter cup, then that's pretty cool though. Sorry I can't be of more help there.

So I guess this is what Im left with:

It sucks! Being that the car is a daily driver, I cant afford to leave it sitting in the garage while I source parts. So basically I have to build the assembly ahead of time so I can install it in one shot...

So I know it all can be done since I have done it. Twice.

The outer cup comes off the center bar of the axle. The outer cup is held on by a snap ring much like the one that holds the axle in the differential. Just get it slid out of the spindle enough and hammer away on either side of the cup till it comes off the bar. You will most likely damage the outer cup but oh well you get a new one.

Just pay attention when you reassemble. I am pulling this from my memory from about three years ago. After you have hammered off the cup, slide the new boot on to the bar. Pop it back in the differential, and pack some grease in the new cup. Put whats left of the grease in the new boot and slide the clamp on to the boot. Put the new cup into the spindle and inside the boot. Clamp the boot on to the new cup. Now put some antiseize on the splines of the cup and onto the surface where the bearing and spindle meet. Slide the new bearing on and tighten it all together. Mitchell says rear axle nut torques to 145-188 ft lbs.

Like I said before the only downside is the lack of tone ring for the people with abs. Just give Marty at Raxles a call. Tell him you have an awd Eclipse and the wheel bearing is stuck in the rear axle. He will know exactly what you need. Fantastic customer service.
