quiet exhaust

I have the Apexi N1, sounds amazing and not too loud. Slightly louder then stock at cruise then abit louder under acceleration and would be the loudest slowing down on downshifts. Some people say this is a noisy system, maybe its louder without any cat? as Im running a 3" high flow cat. Do a search on this system & you'll get a tonn of posts.

there will be a hell of a difference between a atv and a dsm, never seen one on a dsm before but a buddy of mine has one on his WRX and its not too loud at all, and then again my dad has one on his porsche 944 and its loud as hell.

It all depends on what kind of car your putting it on. i dont think it would be too loud on a dsm though,

but one thing about the Supertrapp, my buddy with his WRX, he said he had to run it wide open to build any boost at all, too much backpressure i guess.

edit: oh and ive never heard an exhaust on a turbo dsm that was ricey so i dont think you have to worry about that

My GReddy EVO is one of the quietest I've ever heard. It's deep but quiet at idle and progressively gets louder as RPM's increase. The spooling sound of my turbo has always been louder than my exhaust note. I really like not being hassled for loud exhaust by my neighbors and the local police and yet, still having a great looking and performing exhaust system.

When I put the Apexi N1 catback on my 2g gst with stock turbo it seemed to make it only slightly louder. Things got really loud when I put the N1 downpipe with cat-delete on. At WOT the car roars, and at idle it has a nice purr. -Matt

I second gstracer's opinion. I have the greddy full stainless steel 3' and I think its nice and quiet, the loudest it gets is when the RPM's are falling.

i agree with this also. i have ran several different brands on different cars and i think the greddy/trust is the quietest and best sounding out there. although i have had a trust muffler blow out on me before.

i run a thermal now and i think it can be just as quiet and compareable to the greddy if i had a resonator put in instead of the strait pipe i have in place.

i would go with the greddy, or a thermal with resonator in. :thumb:

thanks 4 your feedback guys, greddy evo it is :rocks: I just dont want 2 be trendy like these guys with civics and kias with the loudest muffler they can find always winding them out in my otherwise quiet neighborhood. Its jackasses like that that give real tuners like us a bad name :toobad:

I have the Thermal R&D exhaust, its a very nice tone. I wouldn't quite call it quiet, but compared to other catbacks it is. At idle it's very quiet and stays like that until you really open up, and then you don't want quiet exhaust anyways :D .

As a side note, could you please stop using numbers as words. Generally moderators and other users find it annoying.

every exhaust is going to be pretty quiet until you slap a downpipe and delete the cat... then no matter what you have, it's going to be loud as hell and no up shifting or rolling by in idle is going to make a cop not hate you...

- 2.5" downpipe to 3" apexi n1 exahust, no cat.
- court on January 26th for Amplified Exhaust

"But officer, it's not amplified. It would be so much louder if I just dropped the downpipe off totally."
"Yeah, that's cute. Here's a ticket."

SuperTraps are useless, the two most common nicknames for these are SuperCrap and StoopidTrap. They create unacceptable backpressure until running 20+ plates, at which point they are, if anything, louder than no muffler at all. They work best when fitted with an open end cap - ie an SS version of a normal plate, anything less suffocates the motor. Don't waste your time or money. If you need proof simply spend a day on a dyno with one of these, you'll come away feeling really stupid and really annoyed - oh, and quite a bit poorer; the SuperTrap won't make it past the first dumpster.

On 2Gs - Thermal is OK until the cat is removed, then it's loud. World Sport is too loud, even with a cat. RS*R is very quiet indeed until the cat is removed, then it's a shade louder than a Thermal with cat.

Hope this helps, those are the systems I have/had on my 2G AWDs.

I have a vote for RNR exhausts. I have their 3" Downpipe back ex. w/ no cat. Just straight all the way back and it is surprisingly quiet. I wish it were a bit louder at times, but its nice being so quiet.

Not nessacerily. I have a 3" downpipe and a GReddy EVO cat-back and I consider my exhaust to be quieter than the rest accros the entire RPM band, not just down low.
My buddy Dale's Talon had a similar 3" downpipe and he had a Thermal R&D cat-back. His exhaust was 4 times louder than mine across the entire RPM band. Don't get me wrong; it sounded good, but it was just very loud. And Dan's (Project_tsi) RNR cat-back is as quiet as mine is.

3" downpipe without cat. and GReddy EVO cat-back = pretty darn quiet
3" downpipe without cat. and Thermal R&D cat-back = pretty darn loud
3" downpipe without cat. and RNR cat-back = pretty darn quiet

These are the only three that I have direct experience with, so these are the only I can comment on.

that is suprising. My exhaust has a 3" inlet with a 4 inch tip, so it probably does not muffle as much as the evo does, however, it does have resonators on it as well, so i would think it would quiet things down a bit. either way, I like it, my parents hear me coming from a few blocks away, my girlfriend is always waiting by the door when I get there, and cops are done writing me a ticket when I drive by. I like my exhaust, all except for the fact that it keeps costing me money.

That's too funny... LOL My girlfriend tells me our 3 cats run to the door when I'm still blocks away. :)

Yeah, my EVO is also 3" piping with a 4 or 5" tip, and I have at one resonator.

My previous car had a very loud, ricey sounding exhaust. I thought it was cool until I had to drive across 5 states in the car. The resonating hum drove me insane. Not to mention it pissed off the local PD and many elderly people on occasion. I am thankful my current 3" turbo-back is as quiet as it is. Now people only hear me coming when my external wastegate is open...... :D
