quick brake question

If I am puttin on a rotor, and painting the calipers, will I need that tool to compress the pads back in to put the calipers back on? auto zone didnt have one to rent, and i didnt want to buy it either

C-clamp is the easiest way.. they shouldnt be any more than 5-10 bucks

the guy at auto zone was talkin about using a really big screw driver to force them in, but i wasnt exactly sure what he was talkin about, and i really didnt want to have to buy anything, or go back up to auto zone to buy it

You mean to push the piston back into the caliper? Yeah you could use a big screwdriver ... I did. Just push it in the middle real hard. Just keep an eye on your brake fluid reservoir, if you got alot of fluid it might overflow when you push the piston in.

ok this sucks, i cant get the rotor off, i tried some PB blaster, i tried hitting it with a hammer, it wont come off, and then it started raining, so i had to put it all back together, because i have to go to work tomorrow and i need a car, but im afraid i wont be able to brake cause of all the dents and such i put into the rotor, and i took off the brake fluid line and a good bit drained out, should that be a concern either?

First to get the rotor off you should use either a harmonic balancer puller or fwd axle hub puller that auto zone has for loaner I think thats what its called. Your rotor has three threaded holes in it that the puller threads into, I highly recommend this as i destroyed both front wheel bearings trying to get mine off. (I got pissed off & broke out the sledge and they still didn't come off). Most piston calipers now require the piston to be screwed in not pushed in but i haven't done brakes yet so i'm not sure if these are like that or not. You can just use a big screwdriver or whatever to turn it back in like was allready mentioned.


If you took the line off and the fluid drained from the line then you now have air in the line and the dents in the rotor won't matter because that brake won't work without fluid in the line. You really should bleed that brake before you drive it, right now it is very unsafe. And you will more than likely need a new rotor.

I agree with this. Air in the lines=car that will have trouble stopping, which is very unsafe.

If you take the whole caliper off the brake line you can put it in a vice. It should be no problem to squeeze the piston back in. But you can save having to bleed the brakes if you go with a method that doesn't require you to unhook the brake line, but it sounds like you'll need to bleed them anyways since you've already had it unconnected. 2gs don't have "screw in" pistons.

You can pop the rotor off by threading a couple bolts in the holes on the rotor hub. Once it breaks free of the rust, it should pop right off.

This may sound dumb but you did have the parking break off when you tried to remove the rotor? On 2g's the parking brake is built inside the rotor, its like a drum/rotor combo. If the brake was off you may have to loosen the parking brake abit as it still may be grabbing. If you want to drive the car you must bleed the lines first to get all that air out.

Edit: Just saw your a N/T, do they have rear disks or is it a straight drum on the rear?

yes mine has rear drums. i also have to bleed to brakes now since the pedal goes right to the floor, luckily im close to work, so i could just walk. and to your statement wret, i already tried that, one of the holes stripped, and the other was about to, so that pretty much cancels that idea...

This is the correct way. I beleive it is an 8mmx1.25. Use a ratchet and just keep ratcheting it in, itll press against the back and pop off the rotor.
