Question about engine to trans bolts

A little background, my starter was making some awful grinding noises, replaced starter and still had noises so I dug a little deeper to find that the car was missing the engine to trans bolt just below the starter on the back of the motor. Not only did I find that the bolt was missing but that the previous owner did not install either of the dowel pins. WTF

Now what I don't understand is that the bolt that was missing(motor to trans below starter) is actually threaded through the block and in the trans. To me that makes no sense to be threaded on the block side and could actually push the transmission away when threading the bolt. Is anyone elses car like this? It appears factory but I really don't know and I wanted someones input before I either put it back together or file the threads out of the hole.

It pulls the transmission towards the block, not pushing it away. The other 3 bolts on the opposite side push the trans towards the block. That small 12mm bolt above the driv. side axle pulls trans towards block. I'd pull the trans and install those dowel pins. Those are put there for a reason. To keep the trans from moving around. You will eventually experience disengagement issues, then a cracked ear on the trans from that lower mounting bolt will eventually occur.

I'm picking up new dowels from sheps tomorrow.

Maybe Im making this more confusing then it is, im saying the engine block(the side the bolt starts on) is also threaded as well as the transmission. The bolt technically couldn't pull anything tight.

The threads on the block don't come into play. Those threads are an M10 size, while the bolt you are using is only an M8 size. The threads on the trans is what pulls it closer to the block.

Ok Thanks, as I said that bolt was missing so I just assumed it'd be the same size as one of the other trans mount bolts(m10).
