Question about CAI and transmission

I have a 98 N/T Talon, and I am being sent a CAI off of ebay. I am wondering, I have a stock throttle body, would it be smart to upgrade to a different throttle body or is there a way to adjust it to open up more?

And also a quesion about my transmission. I have a 5-speed. And say I start in second after turning onto a road... Anyways I accelerate to about 3k and it starts to stutter.. What does this mean? Not giving it enough gas? Not enough transmission fluid? Please let me know.

Dunno about the intake questions but the tranny issue could be your clutch. To test it; park the car and set your e-brake. Start it up and put it into 1st gear. Slowly let out the clutch. If it kills the engine easily your clutch is good. If it feels like it slips and the engine doesn't want to die you have a bad clutch and need to replace it.

If you are getting a cold air intake, the next thing would be a throttle body. The whole point is that you are bringing in colder air but you are also trying to free up the path. A CAI will usually straighten out the path and the next restrictive piece is the throttle body. By changing it to something that is less restrictive (larger opening when full throttle), you will allow more air to hit your intake manifold. The next thing would be to port match your throttle body to your intake manifold. After that, start to work on the exhaust. You are trying to allow the car to "breath" easier by allowing more air in, and more exhaust out. The straighter the path into the car and the straighter the path out, will give you the easy HP gains.

Is there a way I can "open" my existing throttle body more without buying a new one, b/c there like $100-$150, and if you can tell I'm on a budget.

how long has it been since you've given your car a good tune up? plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, etc?? if its been a while then do that and see if that cures your problem. and while your at it get some tb cleaner and clean your tb BEFORE you put in new plugs. and while you got the air intake hose off have a buddy get in the car and press the gas peddle all the way down look inside to see if the throttle plate is all the way open (horizontal). thats an easy way to free up some air flow if its partially closed. just loosen the two throttle cable bolts on the intake mani and you can figure out the rest. if that doesnt cure the problem then take it to the dealer or something and get a diagnostic check. its a likely chance the O2 sensors are bad but it gets expensive replacing parts that doesnt fix the problem. if its serious enough problem and a tune up doesnt fix it then a diag. may save you money in the long run. this should cure your stuttering problem

as for upgrading your tb, upgrading to a cai and checking the throttle plate is enough. for a good while anyway. concentrate on your exhaust. high flow cat and a catback system will give you much better performance gains. careful when choosing a header. cheap headers off ebay look real nice but most of the el cheapo's will hurt your performance. suspension would be your next key. get a good set of lowering springs, not cheap coilovers. you will bounce your brains and your car to pieces. ive owned 4 dsm's, first two were n/t and i know it pays to do it right if your serious about your car. these are all simple things you may already know. if not, do these things yourself. its the best way to get to know your car. an angle grinder (be careful) for grinding off rusted bolts will be a great tool for your exhaust and an air impact for your suspension job will make things easier.
