If you were going to rebuild the block of the dsm (4g63), would it be wise to get the block magnafluxed to check for cracks. I didn's know if poor quality iron was used to cast the blocks or if it was pretty sturdy and not prone to cracking? What about the heads, should they be magnafluxed as well? Thanks

the whole 4g63 motor is a beast... which is why mitsu has used it for like 12 years now on the evo as well as turbo eclipses (obviously). stock internals are usually good for up to 400hp and as for the block and heads, if u have the money, go ahead and magnaflux them, but i do not think it's necessary....i mean, how much power are you thinking of putting into this thing?

I'm not looking so much for high power as for solid performance and as bulletproof as a 4g63 can be. I just don't want to build a motor when I finally get around to it, and find out I have a small crack I didn't know about and have a leak or something. I was under the impression that a magnaflux check wasn't real expensive.

You can't magnaflux the head because its aluminium but you can get some of teh zyglo dye stuff if you think the head is cracked.

I was about to tell him and you beat me to it... :thumb:

A reputable machine shop will check to see if your head is cracked or warped too badly BEFORE they build/recondition it for you. Inspecting your head/block is something that is part of the process. A good machinist will not build up a block or head that is cracked to begin with... :dsm:
