I took the the side cover and 5th gear syncro and the 2nd half of the front case off my tranny to try and find out y reverse wasnt working. anywyas to make a long story short i couldnt find the problem so i put the tranny back together and now when i spin one of the front wheels while its on the jack one wheel goes forwards while the other wheel goes in reverse LOL. explain to me what i did i know its something simple probably didnt put one of the gears back in right or something thanx guys.

ok if its nothing to worry about then why will my car not roll when its in neutral. it will not go forward or backwards when in neutral.

yea the trans is going in for a rebuild but i have no time to drop the trans myself. if it was stuck in gear then i wouldnt be able to take my foot off the clutch without it stalling correct?

Here's a very stupid question, but something that should always be checked....

Do you have the car in neutral? -- have you checked if the tranny is in neutral at the linkage on the case?

Now, first off, you have an open front differential and it will spin one wheel forwards while the other spins backwards when in gear and on jackstands.

Second comes the questions.....

Are you able to easily shift into every gear including reverse at the linkage on the case by hand? Is your lower radiator hose hitting the counterweight on the shift linkage?

Have you checked if the transmission was properly reinstalled? Input shaft alignment and bellhousing/engine alignment dowels?

Did you "dry" shift the tranny on the floor when you had it out? Meaning...did you click through the gears with the shift linkage on the case to see if it shifted propely?

When you say reverse wasn't working... can you specifically describe that? was it grinding going into gear, was it popping out, was it feeling like the shifter wouldn't let you go into gear (binding or feeling like it was blocked)? Please describe the symptoms.

You said that you pulled the 5th gear cover, reverse wave spring (on 5th gear cover to hold synchro in place), reverse synchro, intermediate and input shaft end nuts, 5th gear input/intermediate gears, the transmission bearing plate (2nd cover), and what else? Did you touch the front diff or anything else on the input or intermediate shafts?

You should have torqued the end nuts to at least 75lb/ft and pinged them. How did you hold the shafts still while you retorqued them? You should have used a tool which holds the input shaft on the bellhousing side while torquing these. Did you replace anything in the transmission when it was apart?

What did the transmission fluid look like? Silver or Brass color? Any debris or shavings? How many miles and what kind of abuse? What brand and weight of tranny fluid was in there?

What kind of clutch are you using? Did you take apart the clutch assembly and inspect the pressure plate surface and clutch friction surfaces along with the flywheel? Did you retorque the flywheel bolts to 75#/ft with locktite red (if touched), did you retorque the pressure plate bolts to 24#/ft (if touched), did you inspect the throwout bearing, clutch fork, and pivot ball for wear, damage, etc? Have you adjusted your clutch, replaced your master and/or slave cylinders, or clutch line lately? Did you have any other clutch/tranny related problems prior to you pulling the tranny that we should know about?

I know this sounds like alot of questions, but it will make it easier to start fixing the problem. I look forward to reading your answers to better help you with your problems.

first off thanx for taking the time out to help me. Yes the tranny is neutral, the reaseon i took the tranny apart was because reverse is acting like its locked out, no grinding just completly locked out. i can shift the first four gears easily 5th is a bit notchy though

There is a chance that the nuts got over torqued on the shaft it that makes a diffrence. tranyy fluid was the right color.

it engages first and moves but it will not roll in neutral at all is it possible that the 36mm nuts on the input shafts got over torqued and are causing all this, thanx guys i gotta get this thing to roll so i can get it out of my garage and down to bushur
