Short story. Was picking up my daughters from airport and seven minutes from home I took a turn and lost my ps and lights came on alt and so on. Got it home before over heating. This morning looked at car my alt belt came off but still ok and one peace but as I was trying put it back I noticed wtrpump pulley has extreme play. Back and forth side. Know is shot and can't afford shop fees to do it atm and no garage. I want tackle this with engine still in car. My questions are
1. Was I put the engine in time can just loosen tension to remove it if I only have bottom timing cover and not middle and top?
2. If I have to remove the pulley at bottom and can't remove it by just the four bolts. How can I remove the center one without having it move?
3. Do I need any special tools or what tool I use to loosen tension on idler pulley.
I am only doing water pump.

You are going to have to pull all 3 timing covers, crank pulley, ac tensioner, water pump pullies motor mount, timing belt, and tensioner arm. You will be fine with just marking the belt and pulleys and reinstalling. If you have never changed the timing belt, tensioner and pullies now is a good time.

To add to bryan's comment, I would pick up a haynes/chiltons manual to help out with a lot of the how-to work.

If you do the timing belt, grab a bench vice and friend who has done the timing belt before you pursue that job. It can easily be done in a few hours, and since youre already doing the majority of the work - you may as well do it now instead of having a catastrophic failure later (if it needs to be done that is).

Yup, you're going to have to remove the timing belt, so you might as well replace it if it hasn't been done recently.

This guide gave me some good insight when I first did mine. Some of it won't apply, but there are some really good parts in it:

And of course the vfaq:

To answer your questions:
1. You're going to have to remove all timing covers

2. crank pulley comes off with four bolts

3. I think you meant tensioner pulley...I did mine with needle-nose pliers, but it's probably easier with the tool used in the first guide I posted. Also, if you're installing a new auto-tensioner, you don't need the threaded "special tool" (I hate this f***ing tool, check out my build thread to see why)

If your doing it, do the whole timing belt job imo. I haven't done my timing belt yet so I'll let someone else explain logistics of the whole job. I have done a lot of research on the subject cuase im about to do mine. You can do it in the car but that engine mount will have to come out, support the engine with a jack and a block of wood. As far as the bottom pulley (crank pulley) it slides off after you remove the four bolts, you may need a pulley puller if it won't come off with knocking and prying. Dont go to crazy on it when your beating it though. Research research research until you know everything about this job. Ensure you have all necessary tools, and yes their is a special tool for the idler pulley, I can't remember the name but i know Amazon has them just look up timing belt tensioner pulley tool. Theirs a tool for the tensioner as well. I would recommend replacing the tensioner and pulley too.

Thank you guys was asking about cover because my car only has bottom cover. Timing belt was done by previous owner and since I had the car only put about 10k miles since I had her. Had her for three years.

I would highly consider buying the middle and upper covers. Any little piece of debris in there and you can jump time and ruin the engine.
