I pulled the head of my engine to take it to a machine shop and have them get this exhaust mani stud out, because it broke inside the head, and I cant pull it. Anyways, I don't know how to tell by looking at it what its condition is because I haven't had anything to compare it to as this is my first engine I've torn apart. It does seem like there is a little too much carbon build up. It was suggested elsewhere that I may need a valve job and new guides... But I don't think its that bad. Any help would be great. Thanks.

The bolt on the left is more discolored then the other 9, and I had to use a 4 foot breaker bar to pop it loose, unlike the rest.

Are you doing this because the headgasket was blown? Or some other reason as well? As far as I can tell from the pics (they werent real clear) that everything appears to be ok. Kinda hard to tell w/o seeing it in person. From what I see you might be able to just have the head machined, and be done with it. Like I said though it kinda hard to tell by looking at pics.

The engine looks good with very little carbon or oil burnt on the head/ pistons a good sign. While you have the head off I would have it fully reconditioned with new valve guides, seals, valve job and deck. I would also toss the old head bolts and replace them with ARP head studs using a stock gasket. Use a razor blade to clean the deck surface and keep all the garbage out the big oil return hoes. dont use anthing abrasive or it will trash your bearings. Be as clean as you can.

I already have a new head gasket and ARP studs. How expensive is machining?

I would also hone the cylinders and put in new rings bc it looks like burning oil to me
