for a couple of weeks now my 90 gsx lets out a puff of white smoke only between gears while boosting, and the tip of my exhaust is coated thickly wit black powder substance,which i think is oil burning? the car runs fine. can anyone tell me what could be wrong.

Pull the rubber intake off and check for turbo shaft play. I didn't check your MOD list but do you run a 255lph without a AFPR? My thought is you may be running a little rich if you don't have a shaft play problem.

Eclipsethis90: my car is stock, im very new to the turbo game, im trying to learn as much and as quickly as possible sry, how do i look for shaft play? i can do all the other stuff like intake, tb, basic stuff like that but im some what lost when it comes to turbos. northendtrooper: could the turbo realy be shot? because im still making boost. i was thinking it mite be valve seals or somthing? thanks alot for the help

making boost has nothing to do with it. i had 1/2 inch of shaft play and bent fins and i still made boost. with your engine cold, take off your intake and feel your turbine on the turbo. ANY movement left or right is bad meaning your turbo is shot.
this is what mine looked like. way bad but still boosted.

so I took off the rubber intake and the sensor on the filter to take it completly off the turbo, and the inside of the turbo was perfect not a spec of oil or dirt in it, and there was no shaft play at all and the fins look perfect. so now the bad part, i put the intake back in and now it runs like crap. im hiting fuel cut off at 2500 rpm. what did i do/did not do

black = running rich
blue= burning oil
white = burning coolant

so the white smoke could be a coolant leak somewhere and the engine consuming it in the combustion chamber. for the black soot on your exhaust, that could be normal. alot of cars get that over time on their tail pipes. has the pipe been cleaned recently, and if so how fast does the black soot reaccumulate?

its a brand new tail pipe. i can drive the car but after 2500 rpm its struggles and is already at full boost. after i rev it up the car strugles when trying to get back to idle. i noticed that the clamp on the intake that goes over the turbo is broken and cant tightin it all the way. could that be it? well even if it is it im still puffin black smoke and never did untill i took it apart. thanks alot for the help so far

yep there is one of your problems. you are running really rich because there is a massive boost leak right where your intake connects to the turbo inlet. So your car is metering the air and then it escapes through that connection and then runs rich. buy a new clamp, tighten it down and then post back. Also make sure to check and see if everything is plugged in right with the MAS. Good luck

BoostFrenzy: awsome i will post back on friday,im in san diego finnishing my auto deatailing certification. realy appreciate it.

i forgot to add to also do a full boost leak test to see if there is anywhere else it is that you are leaking. But both of these only solves your current black smoke problem. the white smoke is something with the coolant. Like stated before: Black=rich, blue=oil, white=coolant. So somehow you are burning coolant. Check your fluid levels for your coolant (and oil just in case) and if they are low replenish them and search for the source of the leak. Also if you cant seam to figure out where the leak is coming from, check your oil the next time you change it to see if any coolant is mixing with the oil (bad sign...)

ok so now i got the clamp and installed it and nothing happend, it still wants to die as the rpm are coming down when i rev it to 4500 it almost stalls itself out. when driving i can only get up to 3000 rpm b4 fuel cut off and the stock gauge says im at 7 psi when just driving normal when i shouldnt even be boosting im confused
