Saskatoon,
I took my bottom end in to a reputable machine shop for assembly. Since I was going fully built with esp rods and wiseco pistons I wanted the shortblock done right the first time. This is what they did; degreased, magnafluxed, bored 20 over, honed, line honed decked, polished crank, balanced the rotating assembly and completley assembled with acl bearings for $1000(canadian). Did I get screwed or does this price sound about right? I have never had machine work done so I have no previous experience to compare.

That sounds about right...that is if canadian currency is worth less then the USD...was that for everything...including rods, and pistons? Or just the work? Also I heard good things about those acl bearings, SBR switched over to them when clevite went alum. and dropped the tri-metal bearings.

The $1000(CAN) was for all the machine work, labour, and bearings. I bought the rods/pistons from slowboy for $650(US). I actually just checked out the SB website and thier stage 2 shortblock with the same piston/rod setup as me is going for $2400 US, so I guess I can untie the knot in my panties and chill out :thumb:

Canadian Currency is generally worth more than US. (EDIT): After discussion I found this is not true. My caculations were off and it makes sense that I would lose money when converting US to Canadian. :sosad:

For that amount of assembly I would still say you got a decent price. I had a n/t put together (only thing extra they did was slap on the head) for about $1200 US from a local guy.

Canadian currency is almost always worth less than U.S. money. I live less then 5 minutes from the Canadian border and make trips there a few times a year. Until recently the exchange rate was significantly in our favor. On the topic of machine work, the price you paid is exactly what I was quoted from a very reputable DSM engine builder.

I thought that it was a little less then the USD Luke, just didnt want to say it and it not be true. i total what you paid for all that is really good, well its not free, but for having to paid for it its good:D

So I've been getting ripped off the 3 times I went to the bank this year to convert? I have come out each time with less money than walking in with. What is going on here? Are the tellers pocketing my cash for the trouble of exchanging?

Still agreeing that you got a good price on the bottom end.

HA! Our Canuck dollar has been less than the USD for a long time. Right now I think $1 CAD is worth 85 cents US. I am totally amazed at how many Yankies don't realize this.

At mt restaurant today, Canadian exchange was at 18%, it goes up and down everyday, varying 1-2%. I go by what our bank has for a rate. $10 US = $8.20 CAN, so no it is not always worth more than US currency. Are you converting canadian to US Dollar? That would make you lose money.
