Local Amdahl's says $608... is that way expensive or normal?

They say they can check the timing belt (pullies, etc.) for $30, would this help. I don't know when the timing belt was last replaced, but I dont have that much money to spend on replacing it...

That labor quote sounds about right as it is a fairly extensive task.

My best advice is that you NEED to get it replaced especially since you don't know when it was last done and the few hundred you spend now would easily be worth the thousand+ when that belt breaks.

Also, don't skimp on anything in the timing belt area, get all OEM Mitsubishi parts and replace all the pullies, the tensioner, and the water pump.

I like to replace my seals while I am there as well, to help prevent oil leaking on to that fragile component of the engine assembly.

It takes me about 7 hours to change my timing belt, and you need (not really ... but VERY helpful to have) specialty tools. Inaddition, parts alone are ~$200 to $300. So the price is reasonable for the work.

My first timing belt i bought all mitsu. Second time I bought from www.partdinosaur.com , I had 20k miles on the mitsu parts when the water pump bearing started wabbeling (mitsu dealership sent me an AISIN waterpump rather than a Mitsu name brand). And since you have to take the timing belt off to get to the water pump, I changed my timing belt and went with partsdinosaur. I have ~3k miles on it so far with no complaints.

If you replace the timing belt, make sure you are replacing:
- Timing Belt
- Silent Shaft Belt (aka balance shaft belt)
- Silent Shaft Tensioner Belt (aka balance shaft tensioner)
- Timing Belt Idler Pulley
- Timing Belt tensioner Pulley
- Timing Belt tensioner (a hydralic tensioner)
- Water pump
- All new accessory belts

You can cheap out and not get the accessory belts, hydralic tensioner and water pump... but do so at your own risk with the for knowledge that they may fail prior to the belt or pulleys and you will end up paying far more in that event.

I can change my belt in in 1hr. But i have done it 100 times. A friend of mine was told 800 so 600 is not bad

You must be a 1 man pit crew. Are you factoring in the required work to take the accessories and cover off and re installation? If so, that is truly an amazing feat.

I can change my belt in about an two hours. I have done it so many times now. I would say that the $600.00 is a good price. You should try and do it yourself so that way you can save some money. Plus the shop is gonna take their time so who knows when you would get it back. Take the time if you have tools and stuff and learn for yourself like I have. Also get a buddy to join and get them into the dsm scene like I have. If you dont have the tools or a place to work on it then I would say that six hundred is a fair price.

I had someone do mine for me for 488 on my first dsm and it bent 4 valves the first time I got on it. Ever seince I got it down to about 3 hours from the head being set on the engine, I guess it rely depends on ware you are and how much you trust your shop. If I trusted them, I would pay more for the security of using all of witch from the list above.
