Is there a thread on checking if it's time to replace the timing belt, auto tensioner, pulleys, etc. I've found many threads on how to replace them but none yet so far on 'When' to replace them. The only thing I know that might be useful is to see if the belts are cracking other than that I can't really go on the mileage because previous owner says motor is all good and rebuilt of course.

Here are some pics of the belts

I have a friend that likes to live dangerously when it comes to changing important parts. I just swapped an engine into his car after his lost compression, I spent about 2 weeks in the summer pulling the motors out of each car. and swapping parts. I asked my friend if he wanted to change the timing belt. I encouraged him to, be he wouldnt. The motor has 73k on it. So its in his car now, like a ticking time bomb. :toobad:

A timing belt can't be appraised by looking. However, there is an indicator built into the car: if the odometer is at 60,000, 120,000 or (fat chance) 180,000, the belts need to be replaced. They also need replacement if there is oil on the belt.
Only twelve of those little bumps drive both the cams and the oil pump, and rear balance shaft if present.

Don't push your luck.

anybody know of a decent affordable timing belts, water pump kit? Not looking for high performance, just durable.

I replaced mine last week, due to not knowing if it had ever been changed. It "looked" fine. However when I took it off, it was so stretched out compared to the new one, and I gave it a half a twist and it snapped.
