Price and time of

After riding and driving in a friends Evo 8, I've been thinking about buying a shell:gsx, tsi, gvr-4, and fixing it up from there. I will at least try to find one with an ECU and wires.

So I was just wandering, if anyone that has done this, what was the, roughly, the price of the build.

Is that with me doing all the work? I see it as $600 for the shell, $1200-1500 for engine, $800 for transmission. So what else could bring the price up that much?

Thats really hard to answer... It all depends on how you go about piecing it together. A friend of mine picked up a really nice GSX shell including almost everything for 500 dollars. Piecing a motor together is not to bad if you wait for deals to come up on the net... someone looking for some cash can sell a rebuilt head thats been sitting there in the garage for like $150... granted that you never know what you get when doing buying something like this, but the answer to your question just has to many variables... I think you can literally put a car together for 3-4k if you were patient enough, but can easily spend close to 10k if done correctly.

I would just wait for the deals to show up. I just need to sell my car to get all the parts. What do 99 GS OZ editions go for nowadays? Engine has around 10000 miles and transmission has around 15000, no PS, no AC.

Theres more to a car than just engine, transmission, youll probably want new wheels and tires that can cost 2gs then youll prob want some kind of suspension coilovers really are the best way to go thats 1g. then you will probably have other miscellaneous things you want, the list goes on and on and on.

it's way too hard to tell what it would cost. depends on where/who you get parts from. if you get them new or used, whether or nor you do the work yourself, etc.

Motors aren't too hard to come by for a relatively cheap price. I found a site that has everything you would need for less than $2000 and includes:

Complete Engine
5-Speed Transmission AWD
ECU
Harness
Turbo
Intake Manifold
Exhaust Manifold
Distributor
Alternator
Starter
A/C Compressor
Power Steering Pump
Throttle Body
Clutch
Fly Wheel
Pressure Plate

Granted that with this coming from a website you'll have to take shipping into consideration.

The thing is its never as simple as just swapping in an engine and transmission. There are always issues that arise and honestly it just never works out like you hoped or budgeted for.

I bought a dsm for 1.2k and 5 years later and close to 6 grand later it is still not really what i had envisioned. IMO if i could do it over again I would of waiting bought a running car and gone from there, not only would i have saved thousands of dollars it would of been much more fun and much less head slamming against a wall fun time.

The link you posted isnt a bad idea.. it would be cheaper to start with a car that is mostly together than just a shell

It says all it needs is an ECU and a throttle body.... so it's not a shell.
