Powdercoating adj cam gears...

Well I bought a set of used AEM adj cam gears for cheap but I really dont care for the blue, I want to have them powdercoated black. The blue piece comes out so that is the only piece that would need it, but would I lose the timing marks on it? Would I be able to read them through the powdercoat? They are etched on, but not very deep at all. Just curious, I dont want to screw up the cam gears.

I do powder coating on the side, so I can tell you straight up.

Yeah, it's gonna cover up the timing marks. Powder coating puts a MUCH thicker coat on a part than painting it. Even paint may cover up the marks.

My suggestion is to find a place to anodize them. That's typically what most manufacturers do with their cam gears. It's not really a coating, but dyes the metal itself. Engraved markings should be just as easy to read as they were before.

Cool, forgot about anodyzing, Ill have to look into it. If my timing belt comes in the mail today I will just throw them on as is. In the pictures they look more tealish then they really are. Thanks for the tip though

I just got the brake resevoir bracket in anodized blue from www.boneheadperformance.com and it looks very nice. I haven't put it on the car yet, but I'll take some pics if you want to see it. The coating is thick and from what I see on their website it is a 2 stage process, so they probably put a layer of chrome or something and then put the anodized layer on it. This is the only thing I can think of since they can anodize plastic items too.

I browsed around the site, and I didn't see him offering any anodizing services...

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure what you got is a bracket that was powder coated, but the name of the color was just 'Anodized Blue'. All that means is a bit of metallic flake is added in order to simulate being anodized.

Like I said, anodization is not a coating. You will NOT be able to tell ANY difference between the original metal, other than color.

why dont you just get some super high temp paint and paint them yourself, and if your timing marks dont show well use a pointed tool like a dentist tool and scrape the paint off the marks. if you do light coats it will come out great.

Hmm if anodizing costs too much I will do that. Its not that big of an area to paint so it shouldnt be hard.

For the engravings, I heard to fill them with chapstick or vasoline or something like that and you can paint over thema nd just wipe off the coating when done and the engravings will not have paint on them? I could mask them off with tape, but thats too difficult for such a small area.

If all else fails, I can just scrape away the paint
