Powder Coating Engine Components

I have everything torn apart in my engine bay and building a motor. I was wondering what things would be good to get powder coated, which things are terrible ideas to powder coated?

Pistons DONT powder coat the pistons, seriously though motor mounts, valvecover ,intake manifold,intercooler piping ,waterpipe ,power steering bracket should all be fine to coat.

Engine heat shield, fuel rail, solid intake pipe if you have it. I'm not really sure just trying to think of things that are metal.

I know you have to be careful media blasting the valve covers because of the baffles.

i already have the valve cover and 2 small radiator brackets powder coated. I'll def get the power steering bracket, engine mount and fuel rail done though

Thermostat housing, intake manifold, valve cover, fluid reservoir brackets, shifter brackets, fuel rail, and motor mounts. If your feeling adventurous, you could powder the alternator housing.

anyone got experience taking apart an alternator to do the housing? i like this look when its done right. Ill throw the thermostat housing into the mix too

I powdercoated the block, oil pan, and the little metal timing covers. I put a clear powder on the intake manifold after blasting hoping to keep it from oxidizing. Not sure if it was just the brand of powder I used, but it yellowed a bit where fuel sat on it. It may be just gunk, but there are some areas that are hard to keep clean. It's pretty dirty right now since the car has been down and sitting for a while. I coated all the mounts and accessory brackets, too.

As far as pistons go, isn't there a coating that that is supposed to help with heat and carbon buildup that only goes on the top of each piston?

There is. It's ceramic. You can get Teflon coated skirts as well. I've seen Pistons offered from some of the vendor sites that are already coated.

id steer away from painting components as it will flake and not stand up to the high heat an engine bay has sometimes.

That looks good so far man nice work! Only thing I'd suggest is try to keep one whole color scheme throughout. Like maximum of 2 different colors to accent the rest of the car. I've seen builds where guys have one color going then try to complement it with another color then have red AN lines and then blue intercooler and radiator piping and then the next thing you know it's a freaking rainbow under the hood . Looks like you know what you're doing though and it's going to flow when it's all done. Good stuff!

funny u mention that. I actually had a similar color powdercoat on my valve cover and 2 brackets already from years ago and this color was suppose to be a 'best match' but it didn't at all so I had the pieces blasted to get the old powder coat off and this new one go on so it matches throughout. Only trouble I might have now it to match this powder in paint for other accents

Oh yeah I just checked your pics and it looks like a totally different color before. Good thing you re-coated it! I like that current one you've gone with, almost like a midnight purple what other colors did you have in mind? I'd say if you kept the rest just neutral colors (black grey or silver) you cant go wrong and it'll look real clean with that purple, but who knows maybe you can experiment with some other colors and it'll look great

The other color i was leaning towards was like a Candy Apple Blue but thought it was too bright. You're right, anything else will be a neutral like black or silver. Im even gonna remove the blue wire conduit and blue vacuum lines. I like the idea of only having one accent color to avoid it looking sloppy with different shades of one color.

Hell yeah man that's gonna look really clean with just that purple and the rest neutral. Once everything's all dialed in I'll bet you'll be glad you didn't experiment with anything else! Sometimes simplicity is more beautiful...especially with colors like purple. Maybe gold if anything, just cause I've seen purple and gold look really good together being that those are "royal colors", but it's still hard to pull it off. Make sure to upload some photos even you're done I'd like to see it!
