Edmonton,
Hey all, I noticed that there wasn't any Canadian feedback on the Emissions thread, so I thought I'd start a Canadian one. Cya.

in BC last time i got aircare done they checkeed under the car for a catalytic converter and they look for a muffler. they didn't seem to care about how loud my exhaust was though because it was freakin' loud after echoing inside the building. I'm pretty sure that in BC you need to have a cat and they test for CO, Nitrogen and something else.

I just buy some of that 'garaunteed to pass' stuff from crappy tire every year.. works like a charm. I swear Aircare is in on that stuff too... squeezin the workin folk for every penny they can.

Here in Québec, we don't have to pass emissions. :p I didn't know some canadian provinces had those tests like in the states. I just hope they'll never bring that crap over here 'cause my car would certainly never pass through. If I'm waiting too long at a traffic light, I'm soon to be intoxicated by all the fumes and smoke from the muffler. That can't be normal! :D

In Alberta the only time I have heard you need to pass emissions is if you buy a car from another province or from the US. I have never heard of any random testing done at all.

Verrrry, interesting... That's what I've heard too though; once your inside Alberta you don't have to worry about any of that sort of jazz.

Every two years here in Ontario. I passed last time with the help of a friend at a local testing facility. I would have passed the sniffer part but not the visual because of altered emission components.

Now I have many more mods like cams and larger injectors to screw things up so I guess I will see next year what will happen.

I havn't had to get my car tested yet, the dealer did it before I bought it, but I think he fudged it a bit, considering my front 02 sensor was completely dead, I don't see it passing at all, let along as well as it did without it.

Where in Ontario are you?

I ran 2 years with just a downpipe and some ruins of indistinguishable exhaust components ( i.e had a mufler , but it wasn't doing anything but adding weight so I kicked it off ) then once this cop pulls me over to complain about my broken light and doesn't even notice ( or didn't give a damned) that my 15 yo shitbox mazda was louder then a harley .

Quebec is like the total opposite of california for emisions, unless my car is on fire or riding on 3 wheels , no cop will pull you over to check anything. but we get a crapload of snow and -30 celsius so i guess that more than evens it out :(

I used some of that Guaranteed To Pass garbarge. In my last series of etests. I first tested the car without doing anything but putting sunoco 94 in- FAILED. Added guarenteed to pass. Ran it through as per the instructions. FAILED again substantially worse than the first time. Third pass I replaced the cat which was partially clogged and passed with flying colours. I wouldn't bother with the GTP stuff, if your car fails it probably has something wrong with it that GTP won't fix. I think the emissions here in Ontario are loose enough that any decently running car can pass without a lot of fudging.

Its alot easier for the awd guys to pass here in Ontario since they only have to do an idle test. Normally you do an idle test & a ~3000rpms under a certain load test (think the load is equal to going up a 15% incline or something) but since they don't have awd machines to do the testing, awd's don't have to do the load test.

Do they look for EGR valves in Ontario? I have my egr and all those vacuum lines removed and I think I have to get tested this year.

i have never had to do an emissions test, i live in regina saskatchewan (BOooRriing!). but i do think that there will eventually be mandatory emissions testing accross canada because of the Kyoto Accord.. canada is supposed to lessen their emissions by one ton, global warming and all that stuff.. i hope we can do it before they make emissions tests mandatory everywhere in canada.. that would be a pain in the arse, i know i wouldnt pass LOL...

No emissions stuff at all here, but there are very retarded and unrealistic engine noise laws (which are only tested if a cop feels like picking on you or if you have bad luck). It would kind of suck if emissions testing and such came here.

I also live in Regina,Sask and as said so far no testing of any type visual or emissions testing.Knock on wood.HOw long it will be like that not sure.I would think at some point might have to put a cat back on my car but for now no problem here.

Yes they do a "visual inspection" & look for things such as cat. converter, egr valve etc. If these are missing or modified its an automatic fail. That is unless you have a buddy at the testing center that doesn't notice your emissions components are missing :thumb: . The talk is that they are going to stop the emissions testing in Ontario in the next couple of years, which obviously all the testing centers/garages aren't to happy about. The government makes them buy $35000+ in testing equipment & then scraps the project after 5 years or so, typical government.

Let's clarify this. There is a lot of talk from people who want to scrap the program but they are not part of the government and there are no plans to get rid of it. Don't expect it to disappear until we are all driving hydrogen powered vehicles with water being the only exhaust product.

Some of the loudest proponents to eliminate Drive Clean are the current testing centres. The equipment actually cost $70,000, requires constant servicing, technicians have to recertify regularly and the government set a flat charge for testing. Drive clean has become a loss leader for almost all garages.

I just did my own car today. Didn't bother doing any tuning before hand and it passed easily. The car is a stock 92 turbo with 205,000 KM and has never had any engine or exhaust work. Well, except for replacing the flex pipe a couple of years ago.

If you bring a car back from the US you don't have to pass emisions. I didn't do it when I brought back my 95 GSX and I didn't do it with my 99 GSX.

i have 2 talons live near Kitchener waterloo in ontario,

1 stock turbo 2wd '90 with catback, passes better than most new cars the garage said!! LOL 246,000km!

2nd have a pretty modified 93 awd with like 130,000 km on it and no emissions whatsoever, all i do is slap on a cat and i'm good to pass with no problems!

Good ol government! :talon: :laser: :dsm:

Hardly......Usually they don't care..but last summer when i got my cat-back..decided to go see some friends off the island so i had to take the PIE-IX bridge to get to laval...some f***** cop pulled me over and said my exhaust was too loud. A guess you could have told that the exhaust was brand new with the chrome tips and yellow resonators(which could have been seen, not anymore cuz they are all black..LOL). He started going on about how my exhaust wasn't legal. In my defense, told him it came with the car and passed inspection...he let me off with a warning. Maybe he was just doing it to bust chops..
