has anyone tried to take the 14b apart while its still on the car?? its on a 90 awd. it was a major pain for me. the stupid stud kept gettin in the way. im gonna port the housin to hopefuly fix creep and i didnt want to take the whole turbo off. i dunno if i would recommend this to anyone.

You can port the turbo while it is on the car. First you must remove the power steering pump. Then remove the Manifold. Then disconnect the downpipe. Next step is to remove the 02 housing and you can get to all the bolts fairly easy since the power steering pump is out of the way. After you have all that stuff off: Take the 8 or 9mm bolt of the center band from the turbo ( I dont know exact terms). If you dont know what I am taking about its the band that goes around the center section of the turbo. After you pull the beand off...slowly remove the exhaust housing making sure not to damage the turbine. There is a little pin that is on the inside lip of the exhaust housing that helps align the housing.....make sure not to lose this, I imagine it is very easy to overlook. After you have your exhuast housing off the car port away....you dont have to worry about any turbine blades or anything getting in your way. Also I left out a few steps such as remiving the wastegate arm and such....but hopefully you get the basic idea. I find this way of porting a turbo is extremly simple.

I didn't want to start another thread so I thought I would add in this old one and hopefully get a good response.

I got a full 3" exhaust, test pipe and SS o2 housing for Christmas so I am planning on porting the 14B when I install the exhaust so I won't have any creep issues.

What all gaskets will need to have on hand for the turbo porting? I have everything from the 02 housing back. Is there a gasket at the Vband on the turbo separating the hot and cold sides, the gasket from the mani to the hot side and then are there any o rings for the oil lines and such? Sorry, never had a turbo off of one of these before.

Thanks

Umm, I do believe that there are a bunch of copper crush washers that will need to be replaced when you remove the oil and water lines. Also you will need the gasket for the oil return line that connects to the oil pan. Do not think there is any seal at the v-band clamps. Sooo, just the exhaust manifold>hotside, hotside>02 housing,>02 housing>downpipe, those crush washers(which I got from extremepsi in a package order, probably can get some from autozone though) oil return gasket... and I do believe that is it. I might be forgetting something though. J-pipe gasket if you end up taking that off. Oh, also most people replace the stud with another bolt for future ease-of-removal.

I don't recommend porting the turbo while it's on the car. If you're going to go through the process of taking off the exhaust manifold, you might as well remove the two bolts that hold the O2 housing on and get the whole damn assembly out, put it in a vice and port all day without having to lean over a bumper and kill your back.

As for searching the forums for information about this topic, it's a good idea. Porting and removal procedures have been around the forums for about as long as the idea of doing so has, and it's been covered numerous times. While I recognize that you asked politely and you're looking to get your 30 posts, they don't have to be "question posts." If you have any knowledge to contribute to the forums, by all means, answer questions that you can answer. You'll get farther that way than you will asking simple questions that have been asked and answered many times before.

As for anyone who wants to berate new members for asking FAQs or "didn't use the search" posts, please just report the post and move on. No need to voice it in the open.

That's why I gave him links and tried to be polite about the whole thing :thumb:.
