I don't want to start any religious wars here...;-)

I just ported the exhaust side on my 16g, it looks good and should spool a lot quicker.
What I want to know is are there any advantages to porting the outlet pipe on the compressor housing? Logic would say that if it is opened larger, that it would be able to flow more air. I was thinking that it should be "gasket matched" to the size of my J-pipe, about a 1/4 inch larger. Are there any downsides to this?

No, go for it. You probably wont be able to tell a difference but it won't hurt anything. Just make sure you take off the compressor from the turbo itself and you will be good.
