So i have read all of the posts on here so far about the same problem and i still have a question, or advice rather. So i have no issues whatsoever with not being able to get out of 5th or getting into it...smooth as butter, even at boost. A couple of days i go i changed my gear oil from redline to bg syncroshift and ever since then the tranny has been just popping out of 5th gear at random times on the highway...usually between 75 and 80. I have checked a number of things including the vfaq...but still with no luck. any suggestions?

Hm, I thought it was related to 5th gear pop out too.
Fair enough though :thumb:

EDIT: Just for my own curiosity I did some more searching and I found 6+ threads that reference that vfaq as a possible solution to 5th gear popping out. Wisemen and moderators were suggesting that link in several of the threads.
YMMV.

ya i have checked out all the other threads on this issue including http://www.geocities.com/qwik93awd/Vfaq/shifter.htm and followed all the steps. The only problem that i have with something thicker is that it heats up quite quick. The reason that i started using synchroshift is so it would cool down the tranny and it has done so outstandingly. Except for the added 5th gear pop out.
ok the full story behind this issue:
The synchros in 2nd and 3rd were grinding after i would get off the highway after about 20 min of driving. After i let the tranny cool for about 20 min it would drive fine again. So i put in syncroshift as per recommendation of the guy that built the very first engine for the car that i now own. He also has quite a few others. The tranny now drives considerably better and does'nt grind after the highway anymore. The only thing that happens now is the 5th gear pop out.

Thinner oil = better shifting but worse daily/longterm protection. (Syncroshift, GL-5, most synthetics)

Thicker oil = worse shifting but better daily/longterm protection. (RedlineMTL, MT-90, GL-4, conventionals)

It's up to you to find a good balance for your car since only you know how hard and how often you drive.

I had a similar problem in my 95 tsi. i talked to john at TRE and he said that it was the input and or intermeadiate shaft that had went bad. it only popped out of fifth gear when i let off the gas though. Come to think of it it just moved alot until i put that synchro shift in it also.
