Never heard of anyone doing this with exhaust.. except the extremists cars that are so immaculately clean and shiny they dont even run.I'm assuming it's becuse it uses much less argon this way.How is this poor mans back purging?

One issue I see is when the pipe gets hot enough and melts the glove.
A true poor man's way to shield the inside of the weld is to use flux paste.
