Hey guys whats up, i have a 93 Plymouth Laser 1.8 4G37 None Turbo FWD 5-speed. Im looking to put a nice exhaust on it, however i keep finding the Pace Setters for mine. So here's my (?) Can i put a After Market Exhaust on my car that's meant for a turbo AWD Eclipse or Talon? I was told that the engines are 0 tolerence and if i was to put an exhaust that's not for my car i dont wanna blow the engine. So yeah, if u can let me know if that would work or is the piping not meant for my type of car.

Thank You!

Justin,
I remember a long time ago a guy wrote into Turbo or SCC magazine who refuted that very fact. The guy was a performance exhaust engineer. The magazine claimed that after a certain size N/A cars will lose HP. The engineer claimed to have conducted experiments during product development with progressively larger exhaust and dynoing the car after each installation. He concluded that the bigger you go the more power you'd make, however the progression of power gained actually slowed after more than 2.5" or 3". He still made more power each time, but fewer gains were realized and then you would take practically into effect. On an N/A car would rather gain 15hp with 2.5" that was tolerable (sound wise) or would you rather make 18hp with 4.5" exhaust that resonates your brain to moosh. My own experience cannot support or deny this argument, but I'd figure it's worth a mention.

To the OP,
Honestly, the best thing I recommend is going to AutoZone and getting a 3A Racing muffler; then have an exhaust shop weld it on. It sounds decent and is about the most power you're going to make before it becomes impractical to drive.

Well like i said, if i go to AutoZone or even Ebay the only exhaust i find for a 4G37 is a PaceSetter. I want a bigger tip tho, not to sound like a ricer or anything. But i would like a 3 maybe 4inch tip. So should i just get my own down pipes and weld a after market muffler? Or just go from (Straight Pipes) from headers down to muffler and weld it that way?

No don't do that, your car will sound like straight garbage. I've been around enough DSMs to have heard all type of exhausts on 420As, 4G63 turbs and non-turbos and some 4G37s. A simply muffler is all you need, anything more and you get that annoying raspy sound.

3A Racing Mufflers are Universal.
Here ya go, you got 4 pages to choose from.

FWIW, I had this one installed on two N/A cars (one of them an N/T DSM). Decent sound, opened up a bit of power.

Ill be the first to tell you, idk anything bout mechanics. Im the worst when it comes to that kind of stuff, i specialize in the custom interior/exterior/sound systems. But anyway i just want my car to sound nice, and have that nice deep tone to it. Not like a civic pos, just a nice deep tone. Is that possible with this car or should i just drive it for a bit and then sell it for a Evo?

Just get a 2.5 inch exhaust with 1 resonator and no muffler, you can get a tip for your exhaust if you want. No raspy ricey noise at high rpm and should cost you just like $200 at exhaust shop.:thumb:

Not trying to be a drag, but I'd take an Evo over a 1.8 N/T Laser anyday o.0

Yes, but at what RPM?

Larger exhaust on a non-turbo car generally ruins torque in exchange for top end horsepower. Unless you drive around revving to 7200 all the time, you're not going to notice any gains....in fact, the car is going to feel slower. I played that game with my GS a long time ago- now I have a full stock system with a custom-fabbed (by me) 2-1/2" Dynomax Ultra-Flow at the rear and all of the torque and fuel mileage that I lost came back. I can also hear myself think again.
