Hey I need some help big time car won't start now. Here is what happened, I was driving down the highway around 120Km/h and suddenly after 20 min of hard driving the car sudenly died rpm dropped and there was no power coming from the turbo either and pressing the gas pedal did nothing nothing either. I pulled over opened the hood and the turbo was burning red engine temperature in the car seemed normal. Had the car towed home next day I inspected the engine nothing looks broken. Then i opened the the timing belt cover and the timing belt is stripped on the top about 1/2 inch strip but luckly it didnt break.

Is it possible that the belt slipped because of this and now then engine won't start and if it did slip what is the possibility that the pistons or valves got damaged even tho the belt didnt break. I will have to take to the shop but any help or advice would be very good thanks. :talon:

How many miles (or km) are on that car, and when was the last time that timing belt was changed? These belts are supposed to be replaced ever 60,000 miles (100,000 km) so if that belt was old, it probably fell apart from age. You also might want to check if your balance shaft belt is still there (that's supposed to be replaced the same time the timing belt is changed). If that breaks, a piece of it can get jammed up in the timing belt and cause all kinds of problems. 1/2" strip sounds like around 4 or 5 teeth on the belt gone, you may have still damaged the valves even if the belt didn't break.

At best you're looking at a replacement timing belt. At worst you're looking at a replacement cylinder head.

Thanks for the fast reply the car has 180,000 km on it and the last owner changed the belt at around 140,000km i've personally done lots of work to it and mechanically it has been running great. I actually inspected the belt the a few days before it happened and it looked like it was in very good shape.

The cut on the belt looks like it was made by a sharp knife it's an even strip going across the entire belt about 1/2 inch wide and 1/5 inch deep (no teeth seemed to be missing) but the car will not start now which most likely is due to incorrect timing. Could it be that something fell into one of the pulleys got stuck cutting the belt. Also should i have the pulleys replaced along with the belt.
