ok so I have a 97 TSI I bought for $3,000 which was a STEAL considering it has 103K original miles on it.. buuuuut I bought a parts car some guy wrecked horribly then swapped it into a manual afterwards it shifts FINE into every gear EXCEPT 2nd and reverse it kiinda acts like the detents are bad because sometimes it will go into second and stay in it without me holding it but reverse NEVER stays in even when I force it in it slips out of gear :-( HAVE to fix this I'm in love with the car I MUST have it fixed and ready to ride PLEASE HELP!!!

Possibly your shift linkage needs adjustment (check that it's actually going all the way into gear), or you're got a bad input shaft bearing.

Sounds like the synchros are shot if it is popping out of gear I had the same problem, with a used tranny it could be shot, you never know. The transmission could be bad simple as that, even adjusting the clutch cylinder or cables I don't think will help, sounds internal.

What do synchronizers have to do with it?

This sounds internal I had bad synchros when one of my gears popped out.

You said that already.

I've destroyed plenty of syncros (mostly from abuse and general stupidity), not one of them ever popped out of gear.

Well mine did along with other problems associated wear and tear if he had a transmission he is unsure of.so how many miles on transmission how are the cables.

Bad info there man. Synchro have nothing at all to do with holding it in gear. The synchro is just a brake to slow the gear down to mesh the slider on the gear properly. If it is popping out than there is wear on the slider/gear assembly, a worn shift fork, or bad bearings.

Bingo was his name-o:p

I have done the auto to 5spd swap, very straight forward, the shift tower same, gromet for cables to pass thru same, nice to loose the lil "brake cable" from the auto shift tower to the ignition key tumbler, pedal's bolt in, rear end swap have to fight rusty bolts, but not bad. How'd ya like the master cylinder for the clutch? pretty clever how the firewall is 2-layers metal thick and they cut out the first layer but not the seond layer pretty much leaving you the perfect templet so to speak.

Yes ive done the swap, sure you did it just fine if your up and rollin.

Have had a few trannys apart too, just because this above guy knows of some halfass youtube synchro video dont make him right.

Dont listen to that guy.

Do listen to the wiseman, he is correct.

No adjusting of the slave, clutch pedal, or shift tower/cables will correct this. You must do a tranny tear down, or at minimal pull yours and send out to a reputable builder. Or, possibly get lucky with a junk-yard tranny. Either way, you need to pul it back out and disect it man. Good luck

Well that's what I was told by my technician. He said that and my gears were bad. So a few things caused it.

Now i recall it was the shift fork we all make mistakes.

Can't really go off of what "your tech" say's. To have a better understanding, ya gotta pony up and get your hands dirty, gotta pull the transaxle and split the case your self, the best way to understand how this stuff works is to just do it your self. The OP, your transaxle is on its last leg, you need to disect that sucker down and place parts and re-shim it. I know your capable of doing so because you said you did the auto to 5spd swap on your own which proves you can turn a wrench. Split your case, identify the eff'd up parts, send me a private message, between me and boostdriven we got 4 trannys all saved for parts and emergencies, email me your broken parts list of worn out crap and any questions you might have and I'm sure I can arrange to send some parts your way or help ya with any questions ya got on how to do this.

Since you got problem holding in gears, you are like to not have the cable adjusted correctly or mounted correctly. This is indicated by your inability to stay in 2nd and reverse. They both take a downward pull of the shifter. If the movement is not complete or is block by something in front of the shifter, it will not going into gear all the way. Try the following before tearing your tranny down.

If the car been in a wreck, make sure the shifter lever on the tranny is not bent.

Adjust that cables holder bracket on the tranny. It can cause you not to completely select the gear.

Make sure the cable is not broken either. Make sure the bob weight on the shifter is not hitting the turbo intake or lower water hose.

Im very well aware of how my dsm works this was 20 year ago when if first started, i have some contacts here including tre, and a lot of dsmers friends pm me if you need anything.

Not much knowledge of parts and what they are called in the transmission, don't work much in that part of my dsm. That's what i pay transmission builders for. LOL

hell yeah man! yeah I know what all of this stuff means, I know what a synchro is I know what a clutch fork is etc. etc. I'm thinking my main problem is my impatients due to me not being able to find a 97' trans and buying a 95' parts car I know for a fact the trans shouldn't be right for my 97' anyways that being said note back my "being impatient" quote LOL I just want a manual do you know anyone with a 97-99 manual trans and transfer case that would be willing to even trade me for my auto trans? I would include everything from the trans and transfer case all the way to the linkages axles, brake pedal, shifter assembly. but back to the subject at hand I'm almost certain either it has a bad detent or gear fork but due to the fact that 4th gear goes into gear with no problems I'm not sure which gears share which forks... buuuut I'm also certain the 2G linkages are almost unadjustable unlike the 1G's on top of that I found the center console is a straight up swap all u need out the manual is the boot and shift assembly pretty simple swap really took me 3 1/2 days in my dads driveway...

O yeah man LOL I knew ahead of time the 2 hardest parts were gonna be cutting the master hole and running the clutch line itself but I was super surprised when I pulled the section of carpet back and saw the template right there!! "after I made my own from the parts car, out of cardboard of course :p" buuut I'm not sure which on of you guys said u had parts out the gazoo but my main problem is I put a 94' trans and transfer case in my 97' without swapping my rear out "due to finding like 6-7 different websites saying all 2G rears had the same ratio" sooo I'm not sure if the swap is no good or what but other then reverse and second not going into gear I see/hear no problems other then I need to buy a new master cylinder and put my new set of tires on the car. anyways my main question is can it be done? is all 2G rears the same ratio? I will be pissed if not due to the case I junked my part car about 2-3 weeks ago as of today after pulling the complete 7 bolt to build in the future whenever I feel necessary.. please get back to me I'm not sure what I should do at this point.

Place a wtb or a wtt in the classifieds if your looking to swap things around.
