ok... I see people talking about data loggers and palm OS... Can I get a palm pilot and some software and some kind of interface to hook it up to my car and tune?? This seems very handy and I would like more info.... I have searched, but I am not sure what they are doing and how they are doing it....

ok.... i get it.... you need to have the ecu socketed (forgive me for saying this, like a honda getting a Hondata p100)... are there people that have socketed ecus for sale on this site.... that is for sure something I want to get after I break in my motor...

Is it possible to just buy the chip and socket the ecu myself.. im very competent when it comes to electronics and soldering and whatnot... I could totally do it myself... I checked the dsmlink site, but nothing was said about buying just the chip

The palm is so you can read all the data you need, like knock, fuel trims, ect. You need an eprom ecu and if you know how to sodder than you can socket it yourself. Dsmchips.com is a good place to have you ecu burned with a custom tune.

You don't have to have the ECU socketed for all tuning devices. Also, DSMlink requires a laptop, it won't work on a palm. I believe you can use a palm to tune ECU+ with, however most of the time when someone refers to a palm device, they are talking about a datalogging only device.

All you need to start datalogging is a compatible palm pilot, the software (mmcd is free), and a datalogger cable. All can be had for around $50 on ebay if you're taking the budget route. Some people opt to go with pocketlogger (http://www.pocketlogger.com/?pid=pldsm) which is a little pricier, but more reputable.

I personally bought a Palm m100 (refurb with all the stuff) for $35 on ebay, and a $20 cable off ebay and I'm very happy.

If you want to actually tune your car you'll need another device such as an S-AFC, DSMlink, or a standalone engine management system. Just search if you're interested in those.

This is not true. You can tune off of the palm with dsmlink. One of the people there made a program that does allow you to use a palm It does not have all the features you get on the laptop, but you get all the main ones like fuel and timing adjustments.

well... i will be doing this to my stock 1g 91 ecu.... where can I get a how-to on where to solder the socket in to and all pertaining info....

and where can I get the chip that I put into the ecu.... DSMchips.com has a stage 3 setup for $140.... it allows a decent amount of stuff to be tuned.... would this be what I am looking for?

Make sure your ecu is currently an EPROM ECU though or else you're stuck finding a new ecu, like me.

The only thing about the DSMchips setup is you can't tune it, once the chip is burned, all you can do it take it out and buy another chip. With a setup like DSMLink, you can actually tune the chip once it's in. Of course DSMLink is alot more money, but it's very worth it if you can afford it. :thumb:

You do not need to have anything soldered. Go buy a datalogger, or do what the guy in the thread did with Ebay. You hook it up right to your OBD1 hookup, which is what most mechanics use to scan your car for any problems. doesnt cost much and u dont need to solder anything.

yeah... but a datalogger cannot tune.... it just tells me what to tune... I will probably get one of those, but I also need to be able to tune...

Im VERY interested in getting the stage 3 chip from dsmchips.com.. it has a built in 2-step and hella other features that would be handy at the track....

how much do you think a datalogger costs? should I just get a palm pilot from ebay and get the cord from there too?

I just need a working setup for the datalogger... so, you said I can get a palm m100 and the cable from ebay for under 60? thats hella good... does it work good for you? I can get an safc for myself from my business.... I also sell aftermarket auto parts online... I can just do some minor tuning with a safc and this little datalogger setup you are using?

Yes you can get a kit on ebay for like $100. Or you can buy it seperate. Make sure it has at least os 3.5 and has a serial cable.

To tune you can use the safc to a point. Anything over 550 injectors makes it real hard to tune. If you go big you will want t keydriver chip or dsmlink.

Just so you know, you will be able to tune with a palm and an safc, but without a wideband, you will not be able to tune as well.

I got an AEM wideband O2 and gauge from my built B16A honda... Im not new to tuning, just new to this... im not cutting any corners when it comes to tuning this car... im waiting until Im finished with this current project, then I will do some moderate performance mods, and then get to the tuning.... I am just asking questions now to get a better knowledge of what I have to do in the future....

I for sure want to get the datalogger setup before I even get the DSMlink and all that whatnot.... The only m100 I found on ebay were used and I could get them for less than $30.. I just cannot find the interface cord that goes from the PDA hotsync cord to the OBD1 port on my 1g TSi AWD.. what is this cord called?

I need OS 3.5, right?
