Well im doing a budget build-up and ive seen some talk with 2g pistons and 1g rods. i have a 92 talon tsi fwd built in april does this mean i have the "1g big rods"?? has anyone used the evo pistons? they have a little higher compression rating, what are some ideas? im looking for 300+hp at the wheels... ideas? also my friend has a saturn redline and is getting ready to sell his maf-t. its a 5 wire setup. will this work on my 1g?:talon: thanks for any advice!

If it was built in April of 92 I am 99% sure its a 6-bolt, but they started 7-bolts in the 4th week of April. Just keep your 1G MAS you won't over run it with 300whp. For 300hp keeping your 1G Big Rods, and get a set of 2G pistons or a set of forged, its up to you. I haven't heard of anyone using EVO pistons...but that doesn't mean they won't work or people haven't used them in a DSM, just that I haven't heard of it.

i already have 550cc rc injectors, 2g maf, and 255 fuel pump so what do you think? i have an srt-4 intercooler im mounting up with 2 1/4 piping... im going to run the maf-t because i want a little control over fuel. my car looks the exact same as yours!!

ive heard of ppl using evo8 mass , can read up to like 600whp (but i mean how many people will reach that much)... And id say the 2g pistons thing is only worth it if you are already replacing your pistons, and have a deal on getting the machine work done. It costed me only 50 dollars for the machine work for my 2g pistons. Some ppl will say you only get more off boost power, and that once you start boosting high you feel the boost harder than before because of the higher compression ( leading me to believe better torque ) id also assume better gas milage slightly with higher compression but maybe im wrong. But then again since your a 1g like me and have 1g timing maps youd better get your ecu chipped or have dsm link at the same time your doing those 2g pistons because 1g timing advance is too aggressive and anything over 12- 13lbs on most cars will cause knock with 2g pistons because of the 1g timing advance... I probably wouldnt have did the 2g pistons if I knew this , but then again since my ecu is getting chipped nxt week I probably wont regret it.
Ive also learned, on 4g63s; compression isnt your best helping hand with making hp,
timing and boost are more important therefore id believe lower compression higher timing and more boost would make much more top end power, but compression would probably be better for one who isnt trying to make crazy boost or crazy top end hp numbers ( daily driver ).... But in the end its all in the tuning and value of gas being used...If done right Either way it will still be fast.

You'll be fine on the 1g pistons and if I were you I'd just go with a 2g mas instead of going with the maft, it's easier to wire and it's still good for over 300hp.

CanadianTsi is almost putting down 400whp, and he has a 2G MAS. Also to the OP if you want some control of fuel go get a S-AFC, and logger. Also like nightspeed said they have more off boost TQ, but this isn't that noticable, and also higher compression ratio's don't let you run as high of boost on pump gas then a lower ratio. But for your goals I wouldn't be too worried about that. Your car might seem like it looks just like mine in that pic but what you dont see is that the front fenders are both off, the hood is off, and the engine, and tranny got dropped back in 20 minutes after I took that pic.

As you can see from the bottom chart, if you use an Evo8/3G MAS, you'll need to add 60% correction on your SAFC to get it to work. This will play hell with your timing. If you want to use this MAS, you need to run a Keydiver chip

If you're considering 2G pistons, figure the cost of the pistons + installation against the cost of a set of forged pistons. If the difference is less than $100, just get forged pistons.

If your engine is healthy (good compression) don't crack it open. Work on the other bolt-on's. Cams, intercooler, up the boost, proper tuning, etc. Folks who have done thier homework have made big numbers on a stock block with stock internals.

Don't use your friend's translator. It won't work with DSM's. You'll need to buy a translator that's made for DSM's. Personally, I hate the translator. I've used it before and I could never get a consistent tune, nor could I get it even down to a fine tune. I've heard that the Translator II is much better, but I'm just too jaded against the original one to recommend it to anyone else. My recommendation is a 2G MAS and a SAFC.

thank you all for your input!! i will stay with my 2g maf, but i have a question on my engine. i did a compression test and my cyclinders are 175,168,171,and 165psi, but i have 150k on the motor. it leaks oil and i would like to get rid of the balance shafts worth it?? what safc would you all recommend. whats the easiest and most reliable?

If your not looking to spend big money like for dsmlink or arent crazy about tuning,
id recommend a keydiver chip, so much more convinent ( if you have eprom that is )

And yea i wouldnt recommend running a evo mass without dsmlink or a chip.
But was just saying it as a option.

And like I was saying the 2g pistons are only worth it if you get a good deal on them and get the maching work done cheap but other wise its not worth it, because compression doesnt really do too much for hp in these cars, its all about timing/boost which I later learned. :thumb:

You could use a rebuild with 150k on the clock because there could be a lot of worn internals in there and cranking boost and etc. wouldnt help them.

Id say; if your serious about your car, and want a solid foundation, just at least replace the important stuff ( water/oil pump, pistons, rings, tensioners, belts, gaskets. ) and then start building more power.
Your compression didnt look that bad for a 1g though.

Well I came across some money and went ahead and got Dejon upper and lower ic pipes, manifold, new motor mounts, 3" gm maf, maf-t and a few other things. we are going to the dyno next week and i hope to throw down 280+bhp. thanks again for the advice.
