I have to change my rings for the second time in less than 2000 miles. What would cause them to go bad so fast ?? My car is smoking blue and it has reallt bad blow-by. Before, whenever i would go WOT, the car would feel like it was breaking up, but could that be caused by no tune ? I have dsmlink but just never got it tuned. I have a fp3065 turbo running on stovk boost. Would having no tune cause that ? I also know it was knocking, could that damage the piston rings ? Any ideas so that this doesnt happen again...

Sounds to me like the rings didn't seat properly and now you get blow by. How did you go about breaking in the motor? I know it isn't as much of an issue with newer motors, but it happens sometimes. You will hear both sides of whether it is important or not, which oils to use, how to drive it, etc..

If you got into boost alot within the first 500 - 1000 miles I'd say that is where you went wrong.

yea, im pretty sure the ring gaps were correct. This time in not gonna boost for a couple hundred miles and then get it tuned and then hopefully it will be good.

but i wanna kno why the rings went so fast. Maybe I didnt set them right..? How long does it usually take to seat them ? Can no tune and knock make them go bad ? Can running lean also do it ?

First of all, who says its a ring problem? Did you do a compression test? What if its turbo or valve stem seals?
What did you gap the top and 2nd ring to?

Knock is bad, end of story. If you knew it was knocking that much, why didnt you tune it? Along with the not tuning it, you could have been running so rich you might have washed down the cylinder walls.

Or you didnt hone it last time so there was no seating of the rings to be done.

As for engine break in, Motoman theory. Its been proven over and over.

I break my motors in hard and they always hold for me. You also said it isn't tuned yet, that is probably your issue right there. You could be melting a lot of stuff if it's too lean, and if you know it's knocking, why haven't you tried to correct it? I'm not trying to be a dick, but there's only so much we can do, it's up to you to know that it's dangerous to drive a fresh motor that is untuned and knocking. And to not drive it until it's the tune is at least safely rich with a conservative amount of timing.. You should have stopped at the first sign of knock, especially if it's still being broken in.. but with 2000 miles on it I'd say your motor was broken in about 1,970 miles ago

A tune is a lot more than just "getting more power" out of your car, it's what makes the engine work properly and hold together specially under extreme circumstances like high boost levels. A built motor wouldn't last a month on a stock ECU's parameters if something wasn't done to get the AFR's and timing correct or at least close to correct.

ok, well it only knocks above 40000 rpms, so i just wont go past that till I get it tuned. And if the walls look good, do I still need to hone them ?

You always hone the cylinders with new rings. That will never change.

I would get it tuned. If you dont know what youre doing, then find someone who does or youre going to blow this thing up over and over and over and over.

Man sounds like you are costing your self alot of money. Do a compression and leak down test before you rip it apart again. If the car is knocking why would you let it keep doing it with out adding fuel or having someone with you that knows how to work your dsm link. Or could you be getting knock for some other reason???? How many counts of knock were you seeing? When i broke in my car i had it at 10psi running rich as hell and i beat it for the first 1000 miles. Make sure your rings are gapped right too. Good luck next time.

Its not from the break in thats for sure. I have 130 miles on my engine (mitsu 20 over pistons) with a ported 14B, and I ran 10lbs right off the start with Motoman break in. after 50 miles I upped the boost to 15lbs and I continue to beat the shit out of it everyday. It only smoked the first 40 miles and in my opinion the engine is strong as hell. Something is up with your bore.
