Alright, just got my car a couple months ago, 92 gsx 6-bolt motor, everything is in really good condition, bout 100k miles on it. My only problem is second gear when i first start driving it, it just grinds like hell, once the gear oil heats up a little and starts turning with the gears then its a little better, thats about after 20 minutes of driving though. If i really dont wanna grind second, i dont have to, i just shift REALLY slow, like i put the clutch in, wait a second, then shift into 2nd very slowly without putting much pressure on it. I mean its all great and all, but when i get all my mods done and everything and i wanna drive it fast and start racing it, its really gonna suck cause it grinds SO HARD when i rev it high and shift fast.

Its so bad that i have actually developed a shifting into 2nd phobia. I mean is there ANYTHING i can possibly to do fix it? is there like a special way to shift so it doesnt grind as much? Also i saw a few posts on the lucas additive, and how it helps the oil to rise witht he gears faster, would that help at all if i put some of that in my tranny?

Any help appreciated. Thx

What kind of gear oil do you have in it? Sound like something really thick. I would drain it and replace with either bg syncroshift(expensive) or penzoil syncromesh (autozone keeps it in stock for about $5/qt) Good luck and let us know the outcome.

yea i 2nd that...if you dont want to spend a lot of money just go to autozone and buy some penzoil syncromesh...that stuff works great! it has for me in the past many times :thumb:

alright well i just bought bg syncromesh off dsmparts, i think i bought the cheaper one of the two =\, but i havent put it in yet, cause when i finally got my awd installed last week i put some crappy stuff in it cause i had to flush it all out to swap the transfer shaft. I will add the bg soon, if it doesnt do anything, i'll get the other stuff u speak of at autozone, and let u know how it works.

Is the bg sycromesh i bought not very good? is there a big difference in the two they sell?

OMGI have the same problem. Doesn't just make you cringe and contort your face like silly puddy? I just got used to shifting slowly. But please tell me if it works. I'm tired of thoughts stupid civics catching up to me when I shift into second. I mean they never pass me...well only one but he only got his bumper in front of mine for a split second before it went in to second...so it not that big a deal but it is just kinda embarrassing to here that sound when racing. You know what I mean.

IMO i would run Synergyn Syngear2. This speaks from my encounters with Awd Tranny's.
I have had 6 tranny's this time i went TRE. I have tried GM Syncromesh,BG Syncroshift,Stock Mitsu Tranny Fluid, Penzoil Syncromesh, Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube and it claims race proven, and Synergyn Syngear2. By far mobil 1 and synergyn Syngear2 are the best. But Syngear2 is the best by far. Get Mobil 1 at Autozone and Synergyn Syngear2 at Prostreetonline Good Luck :talon: :thumb:

like the great defiant would say, double clutch that thing. seriously try it. mine grinded soo bad, but doubled into 2nd ABSOLUTLEY no grind and if i did it right VERY smooth and even pretty quick. 1st- clutch in- neutral- clutch out-rev match(do ur best LOL)-clutch in- shift 2nd- clutch out= :D not good for heavy traffic and didnt work on the downs but on the ups man was it ever sweet. u also feel like a real sportscar driver doubleclutching.

Put a Clutch Master Cylinder in it - Guys all over these Boards are tearing up Synchros due to their failure to replace it. EVERYBODY talks Tranny Fluids - no one talks Clutch Master Cylinder.

Um if you are already grinding changing fluids is only a bandaid fix. You need to get your tranny rebuilt. 2nd gear syncs are worn out. TRE has a nice set of double row's for second. You gotta beat the SHIT out of them to get them to grind :p

^ I DISAGREE^ Until you put a Clutch Master Cylinder in it you won't know if your Synchros are toast or not.

He's right. It's a easy check, just look under the dash and pull the rubber cap. (If you can't find it, it's right above the gas pedal.) If brake fluid is running out, rebuild or replace. If it's pitted up badly inside of the cylinder replace. And if it's not leaking bleed your clutch anyways. And if you have too much travel refer to the clutch pedal fix in the tech articals. Check these things first because they are the easist and cheapest. Plus you look like a dumbass and rip it all apart just to see that you could just have bled it. :(
