Hey all,

Well, if you've seen my last two posts, I've been having transmission woes since putting in my ACT 2600. First off, I lost my 3rd and 4th gear. Second, I was having MAJOR trouble getting the clutch to engage further off the floor. Well, I got the second problem knocked out, but the first one is still yet to be fixed. In fact tonight, it just got really f*ckin' weird.

I decided that because I could now shift bewteen my remaining 3 gears decently, I would try to drive my car for a few miles and see if I could manage driving it between my house and work in its present condition. Well, then I started playing with the lost 3rd and 4th gear. All of a sudden, after a little bit of maneuvering, I managed to get the car into 3rd!!! HOLY SH!T!!!! I decided to play a bit with 4th gear, and I found it too!!! Here's the deal though; it's not like regular shifting. I am LITERALLY spending a good 15 seconds trying to find 3 and 4, which are apparently still there, but at the same time, not.

WHY IS MY TRANSMISSION DOING THIS!?!?!? HOW DO I FIX THIS!?!?!? I am a motor person; to me, the transmission is the Devil's device. When I originally "lost" 3 and 4, I called Shep and he told me I might have dropped a roll pin ((whatever the hell that is)). Am I picking the roll pin back up? What the f*ck is going on? Please, somebody help me make sense of this. I can only tell that it is either in the transmission or in the linkage somewhere, but those gears are there, I just want to be able to use them. I have a spare transmission sitting at the foot of my bed; I'd love to sell it and get some cash, so someone help me figure out what the hell is going on.

Thanks for all the help guys,

You're of course losing speed and dropping RPM's when you take that 15sec to shift.
Did you have your tranny rebuilt or worked on lately? If so, then I am thinking that your synchos are out of sync.

No work has been performed on the tranny. All I did was put in a clutch kit and flywheel. As embarassing as it is, I found out yesterday that I had been missing my battery tie down, and found my battery tipped forward near the shifting assembly on the transmission. I'm wondering if maybe I knocked something loose. Any ideas?

I just got the exact same problem. dunno if it really matters but i just put in a second hand act 2600 as well. The car has always had problems when trying to go to reverse (it would always go into 4th instead) but driving it around today i totally lost 3 and 4th gear there is no resistance. I looked at the linkage and it seems fine and the in car shifter seems to be moving the linkage at the tranny correctly. I also manually moved the linkage at the on the tranny to where 3rd or 4th should be and started the car and it still is just in neutral. Let me know if you find a solution. Also how did you fix the engagement near the floor? i adjusted the pushrod all the way it can go but it's still pretty low. it is however completley disengaging( i can turn the wheels by hand with the car in gear and the clutch in) so i'm not really sweating that as much as not having two gears. any ideas? How easy of a fix is it if it's something internal to the tranny or should i just get a new tranny. My car is a 91 tsi awd btw.

can't really speak for greg, but for me i can physically put the shifter into any of the gates with the car on or off (clutch in of course with the car on), but 3/4 do not actually engage car on or off.

DID YOU GUYS READJUST THE SHIFTER LINKAGE AFTER THE SWAP???????????? when i payed somone to swap my clutch and tranny out i had to personally mess with the linkage to get it shifting straight again. on the whole reverse thing. i have always had a problems getting it in reverse, and i have not found out why yet.

Yeah, I can go through all of the gates. But still no gears. This is even after completely adjusting the shifter. Before the incident and without adjustment, I was still getting through all the gates plus got the gears. Third and fourth just magically disappeared while driving.

sounds to me like the Nylon is worn off your 3-4 shift fork. I broke a 3-4 shift fork a few years ago on a hard 2-3 shift, and instantly 3rd-4th disappeared. I could get one or the other occasionally, and sometimes not at all.

Now the bad news. If you keep driving your car like this, the fork could break off, and wedge its piece(s) into the actual gears and could possibly force its self out of your transmission housing costing you a WHOLE LOT more.

Might wanna start looking for a replacement tranny now, its already enevitable at this point.

any updates on this problem. did any one fix it ? if so what was the cause?

i had the same problem. I opened the transmission all the way. found I had a broken 3-4 shift rail.

Ordered steel 1-2 and 3-4 shift rails and shift forks from TRD.

well your problem is your 3/4 shift fork i think my 90 gst did this sorta thing, but you are lucky mine stuck in 3rd. so neutral and third was third, but when i shifted in to any other gear it would stick in two gears. i pulled it apart now i cant remember where this weird little pin thing goes.
